Could someone please advise as to how far one would have to go from the mouth of the Barron at Cairns to catch bream, whiting, grunter etc.
I've only ever been 200 or so metres from the mouth before and noted it was around 2 metres in depth. I have no intention off wandering more than perhaps 2 km off the coast at present.
Which soft plastics, hard lures, bait is worth trying?
Cheers.
Boat or no boat? For boat, the mangroves on the right at the mouth entrance is a good fishing spot with live mullet, lures or a bunch of prawns on your hook. I have caught Barra, Jacks and the fish you mentioned above. Also the old Barron mouth, outside the main mouth and turn right. The flats outside the mouth hold some good bream, whiting flathead. There used to be a big stick marker on the sand bars out front, that was a great spot, unknown now as i have not fished there for a while.
For land i fish the mouth on a low tide right where the current runs heading out around the point where it meets the sea. Soft plastics and half pillies have turned up some good flathead and bream for me in that area. Of course the good old prawn works wonders also. The inside sheltered bay has never really produced anything worth taking for me.
Also under the airport light bridge is another good spot at night with small plastics, live baits. Hope this helps.
How far are the flats outside the mouth from the last channel marker? Do I turn right at the last marker?
The mangroves on the right at the mouth entrance would that be near the cabin on the shore?
The area designated as partially smooth water ie: Double island, upola reef, Green island and Little turtle would it pose much of a problem in a 4.3m tinny with 30 horse on a calm day. Any sandbars, rocks etc. to be wary of?
Thanks again.
Cheers.
