chasing bream on the gold coast

hi once again guys the other day i caught a 35cm bream and the fight was outstanding, absolutely loved every second made me feel like i earnt the fish unlike flathead fishing like i get 50-60cm flathead but theres the 2-5 second fight then just dead weight. The main question im asking is wheres some areas i can go around gold coast to catch some nice bream on soft plastics and also what kinda soft plastics would i use.. i know a lot of people will say estuaries but before you say that can u specify what estuary, what river am i looking for and where abouts should i be positioned on that river/estuary. Also a few suggestions of leaders, jigheads ive watched many youtube videos on this but that doesnt make me a good fisherman what so ever so input in very much appreciated and also the main topic im looking for is spots to go catch bream.

    cheers

I guess some pointers for bream fishing is go as light as you can. i.e jigs/leaders I have had some luck on plastics with bream and find that getting the plastic in close to any structure and let it fall, a few twitches and you should get some interest if not after a few move along. I fish mainly from a boat and find that going up along the rock walls works for me, I fish the brisbane river so aim to go with a 6-8lb leader and a 1/8 1/0 hook don't be afraid to go lighter on weights like the HWS jigs are good also but I find them abit difficult on the slim profile plastics such as turtleback worms. 1/16 or 1/32 jig heads would work also depending on currents. What size mainline are you using? I get a few flatties around that size 50 - 60's and they give me a bit of sting sometimes on a 5lb main. Plastics - Can't go past the grubs 3", prawns 2" & 3" also the turtleback 4". tight lines.

hey once again got all my gear set now if anyone could suggest some shore fishing spots for bream would be great another thing is how do you rig for shrimp the normal way as if you would a minnow or from the back and make it swim backwards as prawns do?

Re: chasing bream on the gold coast

hey mate, being landbased keeps you pretty limited. i catch most of my bream on lures casting at jetties and pontoons from my boatin most of the canals around the gold coast, best places for me are broadbeach, mermaid and burleigh waters, and the canals that run off talley and currumbin creek. but land based i think marinas and harbours, like jack evans boat harbour at tweed and all the ones up the north end of the coast. casting your lures under the big boats and trawlers and around the pylons and jetties will produce bream. if are really keen on fishing for bream on lures buying a canoe or kayak would be a good idea. you can go anywhere in them and sneak up on the fish. also in currumbin creek at the gold coast highway on the southern side if you go down on the rocks and cast blades or plastics i suppose, cast them out as far as you can on both sides of the bridge and hop them off the bottom at the top of the tide. bream school up there at this time of the year and last year i remember i got about 12 in a couple of hours last year on strike pro switch blades.

also with lure choice, i have found with bream a squidgy wriggler with S factor apllied about every 20 mins will outfish gulps everyday of the week. bloodworm is my favourite colour in the 70mm size and is the first lure i will tie on every trip without doubt.

    hope this helps mate

and with rigging prawn and shrimp imitations you generally rig them as you would any other plastic. most are designed so when you twitch or jig them there tail flicks like a prawn.

i have those wrigglers but the tails getting bitten off 80% and have not produced a fish for me before, so little tentative towards using them and thanks for the spots will try them out definately and give you some feedback on how they went, at the end of the day i dont care if i even catch a fish on SP ive caught plenty but in 2 trips my brother has had no success so i desperately want him to catch a fish and i thought bream as they would be a good fight and something for him to look forward to each time we go fishing. Dallas thanks for the help i dont suppose you know any other land based jettys or marinas we could try at all just want to have a vast range of places to try if things arent going well.

Re: chasing bream on the gold coast

Hey grant, i was having the same issue with the tails being chopped off, so i got a set of the jigheads from Spines tackle, placing the weight inside and has the "W" hooks under the tail to prevent that. I can say it works lol

Before yo kill a bream just think about this i know it is legal to take bream but a one kg bream is about 25years old and if you kill a one kil bream it takes a quarter of a century to replace that fish

Re: chasing bream on the gold coast

ahh im not, ive never really put too much effort into looking for bream landbased. i know that 19th ave lake, laguna and lakewoods hold alot of bream they can be pretty timid though. doing a lap of laguna on the run in of a big tide casting plastics at drains and other likely spots always produces fish for me, bream, flathead, queenies, trevally, jacks and barracuda. bream like heavy structure so where there is things like pylons, jetties, rock walls, oyster leases, weirs, drains there should be bream.

    hope this helps

Re: chasing bream on the gold coast

thanks once again guys and yeah im going to purchase a pack of 1/32 evolution jig heads they are the ones with the weight system inside a treble hanging off the back so anything that little who wants to have a go will fall victim to those trebles. but also still a few spots 19th ave lake is a very long drive for me considering im going from brisbane to the coast also what is the right moon to catch flathead and bream also does anyone else know some spots i can pick up some decent fish on poppers havent done it in a few week and wanna attempt it again if someone could suggest a popper spot or 2 it would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers grant
