Trolling For Jew Or Other

Hi all,
I have gotten my setup for jewies down pack now. 3 jew to session on the good days/ best days on the soft plastics. Just wondering which way to rig and troll a deep diving lure. I have trolled for flattys successfully. I would like a lure which would occasionally touch the bottom in 4-6m of water. Preferably for jewies. I troll at 3knots or slower is this correct. Were should the lure being trolling at depth wise. Maybe a prefered lure/brand.

why would you want to change what is already working?...but if you must then, RMG 125mm Scorpion 5m or crazy deep 8m depending upon depth. Take you pic on colour but mullet or quantas always effective.

wow you sure have that worked out what size fish have you been nailing.Are you fishing the bigger tides and what moon phases have you found most productive.Just a guess for me but i recon anything to 200mm and dives to a mtr or so of the bottom.

For me the tide is not that important, the best tide which works for me is the bottom of the tide and fishing through the tide change. The time of day is very important early morning, or afternoon. I like to fish when the moon is about half or no moon, im not a fan of fast running current. The way i fish for them is a nice light wippy rod 2-4kg pflueger with 6lb and gulps. I always drift setting up a 500m drift about 20m from the shore. Casting one gulp at the shore and 2 cast parrell to the shore. You have to put in the time though. At the moment it seems that most fish including jew have quited down a bit on the soft plastics, people only seem to be catching them on trolled hardbodys as they cover more ground. Dont get me wrong though there still about on the softys. Its very hard to some up in an answere which plastic to use, i have about ten posible go to jew lures. At the moment 5" satay chicken gulp jershads are working, two weeks ago 4 " pumkniseed powerbaits were working. The leader which i use is 16lb surecatch invisible fluro, but i have recently purchesed 15lb black magic and that works a charm. Retrieve the plastic with violent double or triple hops of the bottom with a 1/4oz jig head in 4-7m of water. Make sure to swim your lure in the water, make sure that when you pull it through the water quickly that it dose not spin or do anything adnormal. Mate where abouts do you fish and do you have any tips for me, im always learning from whoever i can, always talking to people out on the water which look like they no what there doing, this is what makes me such a successful angler. Thats Awesome info thanks alot mate ill be taking all that on board.I go fish in the Clarrence down near Yamba mainly ,when i can coax the missus into going ,as my eye sites a bit dodgy after the cornea transplant.I cant wait to get back to work so then i can go fish when ever .I have a mate thats brother cant find anyone reliable to go with outside,so i put my hand up and just waithg for the weather to calm down .Cheers Rob

Well worked out young fella....The only difference I have is that I find time of day not so important. On my last yak trip in the Richmond I managed 6 jew to 68cm. Low tide was 10.45am. All fish were taken on the bottom of the tide and the bite lasted about 25 minutes before shutting down. My go to lure is a 100mm squidgee silver fox or evil minnow. Im not sure colour makes that big a difference. Jig head varies with depth but 1/4-3/8oz in up to 8m of water. The jew are very specific in there location and if your 5m either side of where they are sitting you might as well be fishing in a baby pool..Find the bait, find the fish, you will see them on the sounder. Rob theres some excellent water around the collis wall for jew.

Thanks stonecold thats some good info aswell .Dad sent me a heap of lures from up north and i checked them out as most of them are big trolling divers,but i found 4 RMG 150 scorpians ,so i cant wait to give them a bash.
Do you mean the deep hole at the end of collis wall,i know there is some deep holes in the clarence ,I have a few of them marked ,i just got to put evrything together.and go and try them .Have you guys read 2 articles that STEVE STARLO wrote in modern fish a while ago about fishing jew in the daylight,I found them at the libary,ill let you know what issues they are .Excellent info ,he fishes a spot at the mouth at the bottom around the full and new 3 days before and after each,then moves a few hundred meters upstream to the next spot stays there for 30mins until the tide catches up the moves up again .He states that the bait is the first to come into the river with the first flush n of the tide ,then the Jew and Bigger fish chase the bait HMMM makes sence to me i just have to organise the time to do so .Have you guys tryed thismethod,Up north the Barra charters have been doing this for years.Words from the same article.

Rob you'll probably find a few scattered all along the wall but they will sit tucked up in ambush spots close to where the bait is. That big hole is a good spot to start. You dont necessarily need deep water just some structure to hold bait or hold fish out of the main current. The fish in the pic above came from a section of river where it is 2m deep and falls into 5-6m along a ledge. It shouldnt take you long to find where the bait sits if you run a sounder over the area. Starlo's technique is not new here either...the local jew jockeys have been doing it for years.
