Well..it is done and dusted by the Minister.
I do have one question: what about the Science that was supposedly the best and oh so factual ? It showed that bans were absolutely necessary and that nothing else could do the trick. Obviously either the science was not all that credible OR winning votes is more important than the science and the fish stocks.

Wags made the post about lying politicians not me. But I agree with him to no end.

Why should we give Mark, or his team, the benefit of the doubt.
Why won't they change their minds?
It seems to me that through history all politicians (especially in the last 30 years) lie through their eye teeth.
All they're worried about is winning the next election. To prove this when was the last big infrastructure project undertaken that took more then a term of power to complete?

Pretty hard for one team to slag off about the other team's playing field when their playing field may be worse.
Or...simply put what has Mark's team got to offer us?? What are their policies??
At this stage they can offer....well...didly squat. So why should anyone vote for them if we do not know what cards they're got in their hand?

All politicians say things to try and give themselves an edge (ie got a big scrotum) over the opposing team but when the crunch comes they're just as bad as each other. (ie scrotum-less)

Yeah Pinhead....what about the science?? It seems to be flawed a fair bit now doesn't it.

Personally I'd prefer the closure to the 4 bag limit and 1 over 70cm's. Not much of an incentive to travel wide to get a good feed of snapper is there?
But there's a whole lot more incentive to fish for snapper close in. Go fishing close in (Mud Island for example) for an hour, bag out and shoot home. Done and dusted in 2 hours.
How much pressure is going to be placed on those sorts of hatcheries?
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

True that. The duplicity that is beyond apparent in this outcome is glaring, for all to see. It reeks of Hypocrisy. It reeks of vote grabbing. What about the Green Preference Deal they possibly haven't done yet? What will they do next to secure that little plum?

The Election will be next year, for sure. These new regs are active from September 1 (but won't be Policed of course), and the March ban is gone. Politics.

I'll bet, in the upcoming Election campaign, we'll get Labor hacks on here saying that the LNP will introduce bans, smaller bag limits, tougher slot sizes and more Green Zones. Be ready for that one folks. Anna & team will do anything they can to get their grubby little hands on your nuts (sorry Ladies!) for another three years. Don't, for God's sake DON'T let them in. I reckon the Blind School could have done a better job of managing this issue.

I also think that if Mark were a goose and had never been fishing he would probably have done a better job. He is not a goose, and he can fish. Of course some folks differ with me, but I believe we should just get so solidly behind him that the LNP NEVER have to make a deal with ANY GREEN, because they are the real danger. The Greens are in bed with Anna (and Julia) and they are pulling us all into a very nasty place.

Proof is in the pudding Timi.
We need some policies to compare and someone to say....this is how it's going to be.
Sad thing is we won't know if they'll change their minds until after they're in power.

How come politicians of all persuasions cannot be accountable for breaking their promises?
It must be remembered that Anna's mob aren't the only ones who have ever pulled the wool over our eyes.

So you are more worried about the wolf knocking at the door than the one chewing your legs and arms off??

Any party that has been in this long will be rotten regardless of lib or lab but even the card carrying labor men on AF can't defend this current labor government as they are truly undefendable. I do understand why the LNP are not releasing policy just yet and it makes some sense to me given the apathetic nature of most to change. All labor will do is adopt part of the policies and given the nature of the beast will be to vote them in again if they are perceived to be like for like and throw in a little battler sweeteners.

Fishing policy is a minor part of the picture for me as there are much more important issues at hand but I do love my fishing and it will play a part of the decision process

Scott, I really couldn't give a rats arse whether people dislike my post. Mark was asking for our opinions - so I gave him mine. Don't get me started on the Carbon tax - QUOTE"there will be no carbon tax under my government blah blah fkn blah" - "It's NOT a carbon tax, it's a TEMPORARY CARBON TAX"

They are all the same lying backstabbing bloody kids running the country. Anyway I must go and clean the shed out and help a mate out because that is what I said I would do today.

    Cheers.

When fishing pressure is increasingly applied to such fish stocks the first impact is "growth overfishing". This is a reduction in the relative abundance of the larger/older age classes. Growth overfishing of Snapper is severe in NSW (see NSW Fisheries Website/ Snapper assessments). It is also appearing in Qld in the more heavily fished sections of our coast. The normal management response is to limit the take of large fish - which is now the case. Of course there is an immediate impact especially on those who target the large fish. Unfortunately this cannot be avoided if we are serious about looking after our Snapper stocks.
The more severe form of overfishing is "recruitment overfishing". This is where the take of adult spawners is so high that subsequent production of eggs and small fish into the stock is reduced. At this time there is no evidence of recruitment overfishing of Qld Snapper stocks. However FQ has been monitoring the abundance of small snapper in the Moreton Bay juvenile habitat areas for 5 years and we expect that information on Snapper recruitment patterns will be available over the next couple of years. In the meantime the min size of 35cm means that Snapper spawn for about 2 years before they can be kept. The limitation on the take of large fish over 70cm is another means of preventing the possibility of recruitment overfishing.
Dr Barry Pollock Chairman Sunfish Queensland
Thanks for posting that info from Barry. As a succinct summary of the status of the snapper situation it was very straightforward.

Interesting that, given the assessment (not sure if the assessment is Barry's or the official Government one??) that there is no evidence of recruitment overfishing in Queensland, then one can only wonder why they decided to reduce the bag limit to 4? Surely if it is a "growth overfishing issue" then it makes reasonable sense to leave the bag limit at 5 and simply limit the number of larger fish taken as per the Sunfish proposal. Perhaps FQ disagree with the assessment Barry provided? Would be good to know why.

I wonder where our mate, Mr Groves, is now ???
    I think he got shuffled!

Today, the Director-General of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) announced that I will be moving on from Fisheries Qld to a new role elsewhere in DEEDI. This move will take effect immediately on my return from leave on 4 July. While I have yet to explore the exact nature of my new role, it appears to be an exciting opportunity around the central economic challenges facing Queensland.

    Re: New snapper regulations

    Hi
I haven’t been on Ausfish for a few days because after a while the constant whinging and complaining by the self-interested gets a bit boring. My apologies to everyone who has made some really productive and constructive comments on the topic, you are the ones that encourage me to keep fighting.
As for the Sunfish website, if that’s all you’ve got to complain about, go for it. Fisheries regulations are not what we are about. There are many we don’t agree with and promoting them is Fisheries Qld core business. Angler education is about teaching people the basic mechanics and promoting sustainability, responsible fishing and learning to love the sport. There are thousands of kids, seniors and disabled new anglers whose smiles are all the thanks we need. We are too busy doing angler education to write about it.
    Barry Day,
Sunfish had exactly the same opportunity for input as anyone else. We submitted our response to the RIS and posted it on our website for everyone to see. At no time did Minister Wallace ask us for an “approval” of his decision. We got the announcement the same time as the media outlets received it and at the same time as QSIA.
Of the four options in the RIS and the one announced by the Minister last weekend, it was probably the one with the best outcome for the average rec angler. Probably not for the ones who like to catch as many big ones as they can but for the rest of us that are happy to be able to fish for snapper when Mother Nature allows and not when Fisheries Qld say we can it’s a better choice. From my personal perspective I’d rather get a nice mixed bay anyday. If I considered how much it costs us to go fishing we may as well sell the boat, that’s not what it’s all about. Well not for me anyway.
Keith, after all these years you should know better than to pull my tail.
I’m certain you wouldn’t be as niggly if you had got the ITQ you were after. I use you in the personal sense because I know that there are a lot of charter operators who weren’t happy knowing that only a few of them would be eligible to get any quota with you. The snapper process was such a huge debacle we concentrated solely on looking out for the rec sector. So, I guess it’s now time that that the other sectors “shared the pain”. I’m sure you remember that phrase. It was the one used by yourself and a notable colleague or three trying to coerce Sunfish into accepting Option 1 at a meeting at Marine Qld when the commercial sectors were looking to get commercial advantages from the snapper process.
I also don’t believe you should try to go back and call yourself part of the recreational sector any longer. That ended when you were part of the group that ejected Barry Pollock from a meeting at Fisheries Qld. That meeting I have been told was attempting to get an agreement from Fisheries Qld to reallocate some of the allocated snapper catch from the rec sector to the charter sector. You have chosen a position so move forward and try and work with the whole of the charter sector to get a management plan in place, don’t try and get others to do it for you.
My final comment on this forum topic
Have another look at the five options (the four in the RIS and the Ministerial decision) and make your honest choice on what is best for you. Don’t make your decision on what impacts the choices have on any other sector just yourself.

    Re: New snapper regulations

    Judy,

I was a rec angler before the Snapper Review & despite highlighting the commercial imperatives of the charter sector during the Rocky Reef Review, I remain, as do my colleagues, firmly under the rec umbrella in legislation thanks to Wally's Snapper Plan.

All (most?) charter operators would enjoy the certainty of a replicable, auditable & robust PROCESS on which Fisheries decisions are made. Wally's unilateral Snapper Plan announcement provides no certainty to ANY stakeholder, especially those like me who have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in a marine business. All it demonstrated is that the Minister can ignore Fisheries, fisheries stakeholders & their investments in time, social engagement or financially to impose his own personal position on recreational fisheres and Industry alike without consultation.

All my questions & subsequent statements refer to developing a future process within Fisheries which will deliver this solid process. There is no point even beginning to engage in the upcoming Recreational Fishing Development Plan until these questions of PROCESS are put to bed.

And one of the questions to be asked after a robust & accountable PROCESS is in place, is where will the charter sector sit? But this conversation cannot even start because of Wally's unilateral actions. Just as described in Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, all stakeholders need to feel safer & more comfortable before beginning on another consultation journey.

    Cheers,

    Keith
