FishinG LIne colour, Does it make a difference

I'm just wondering if Fishing line colour will effect hookup rates. Most of the time i use some clear leader about 50cm from the hook. We are talking mono here.

I have some ultra flouro and the normal white , green line.

Braid wise i half pink, blue, green, white

Hi Timmdo, I mainly fish deep water 60 metres +. I have used every colour of leader blue, green and clear and it seems to make no difference. I understand that colour dissappears at approx 25 - 30 metres (from my diving days) in any case, so at these depths colour makes no difference. The same could be said for flurocarbon, I think it is meant to have the same refraction properties as water. It would make no difference in deeper water as there is no light to refract. I only have one leader that I use in the esturary, clear flurocrabon, so others will need to answer your questions in shallow water.

When I was first getting into braid, I didn't know about using a mono leader and always used braid as my leader in very shallow water 1-2 metres and still caught all the bread and butter fish. I was mainly using the Fireline in smoke (one of the first popular braids many moons ago). It seems that when I changed to mono/fluro leader I was catching about the same. I wouldnlt use braid as a leader anymore (haven't for 10+years) but just an observation.

In relation to braid colour, I know use Daiwa Saltiga Boat, with multiple colours to knwo how far down I am. It works great except for the fact that, like many males, I am colour deficient (some call it colour blindness). Daiwa have put two colours that look very similar next to each other and sometimes it is hard to tell. Prior to that I always used Fins in yellow, cause it was the easiest colour for me to see.

    Regards Adam

I remember a charter I took out of Botany Bay and they used a salmon coloured line and swore black and blue that it was the line that got more hook ups than any other they used.

    Hey Timddo,

The flouro yellow breaks down quite quickly from the uv factor, this is a real problem when trolling. This has happen over 12 months, went from 8kg to 4kg.

Not if you use a clear trace, in my opinion.
Might well be just superstition, but when using a high-vis main line, I always like to use a 'clear' trace or shock leader of the appropriate length.

I always use a length of leader from my braid, not sure if it makes a difference though.

The only reason line color matters to me is so i can see where it is in the water for lures.plastics.

For fresh water fishing it does make a difference in my experience, seems like i get less bites on fluro then normal mono, however if you use clear leader it eliminates the problem somehow.
