Re: Flathead fishing
Grant, Flatzie is on the money! I first read the tips he gave "Want to catch and succeed on plastics in Estuaries" quite a while ago now, and since then 2" shrimp have became my favourite SP for estuaries. I like the peppered prawn when fishing close to weed beds, and banana prawn when its mostly sand. These little SP's have been responsible for nearly all of my biggest flatty, and it seems there's not too much that wont take them. I've caught flatty, bream, tailor, snapper and a very unexpected estuary cod, all while using them to chase flatty.
On a good day I can get away with a 1/12 jig head, and some times I have to go to a 1/8. Obviously you will have to match the right size jig head to your particular conditions.
As you already know, hammer the drop offs and edges of weed beds... and have fun!
Good luck with it mate.
Cheers,
Worky.

Re: Flathead fishing
hey mate trying the shrimp didnt even cross my mind and with your jig heads seems very light im using 1/4 jig head but i have to against a decent current whether its low or high so is 1/4 alright? or too heavy im very new so i have no idea to be honest mate well tomorrow ima give the 3" shaky shad in pumpkinseed colour and see how it goes might pick up a pack of the shrimp to im going to wheres its completely sand but if i walk about 100 metres theres some really nice weed beds now im not sure do i fish the weed beds? or just stick to the sand what colour would be best peppered or banana because i know a bit deeper there is weedbed and i have located the only drop off at the location and does it make a difference if the weed bed is on a drop off?

Re: Flathead fishing
grant, 1/4 is fine for flathead, especially in any sort of current you will struggle to keep the plastic on or near the bottom with a anything smaller in the broadwater. Also you wont be able to cast a 1/8 and lighter very far at all especially if there is wind in your face. keep your distance from your quarry and your casts long as possible.

Re: Flathead fishing
I agree def the lightest jighead you can run with still staying in contact with the bottom, 3 and 4 inch pumpkinseed minnows are a killer for flatty they cant get enough of them, in regards to your weed question, u want to keep it above the weed dont let it sink into it or your hook will soon catch heaps of it, fish light jigheads and work it a lil quicket to keep it up over the weed. they will come out of it and smash it up. Hope this helps. cheers

Re: Flathead fishing
thanks j man, well after 2-3 hours picked up 2 legal dusky Flathead one being just on the 40cm mark and the other was 51cm and my god was it fun to catch but during the day caught a few 35-39 flatties and it contemplated after bout the 3rd undersized flatty where the hell are all the big ones then finally bam the 51cm flathead hit the shaky shad as if it had never seen food before. All in all was a good day went through a pack of the 3" shaky shads in pumpkin seed cant complain because you would spend at least that on bait and suprise suprise no extreme fishy smelling hands but thanks guys for all the info definitely went a long day with today's performance just wondering what the hell do you do about toad fish i was fishing the drop offs but as soon as it was in the less than 1 foot of water deep they would just nip the tail which was very frustrating as the plastic was fine cept the paddle on the tail was gone , but maybe that's just fishing with soft plastics but is 1 pack per fishing trip about average or shouldn't i have gone through as much. Also fishing plastics at night whats the trick i came back to the spot later at night and not 1 thing what so ever is there a trick to it or just the fish would have moved?
cheers,
Grant
