cooking on board and other dumb questions

    g'day all, as the title suggests, a few of you will laugh at these questions but here goes anyway;

    1) Is it safe to cook on board my 3.9mtr hornet. was thinking of having an old frying pan and my lil gas burner up front of a night sometimes. it'd be nice to have that option to maybe eat a few nice fillets fresh off the boat. my concern are the fuel vapors emanating from the fuel tank at the usual spot in the back left of the boat. safe or not?

    2) I was strongly considering buying foils for the motor to get up on the plane at lower speed (as there's a lot of 6knt areas on the goldy). ive had them before on an earlier 3.75 mtr tinnie and it worked well. even with better weight distribution i can barely see where i'm going at lower speed. question is, which should i do
    - buy the foils
    - would moving the motor pin up or down one hole help in any way?
    - or just buy an extendible tiller arm and stand up n see?

    3) was thinking of trying to source a place where i can buy a walkway for the trailer and have it u-bolted/welded onto the trailer. which is better, u-bolt in or or weld? also anyone know roughly how much it would cost for the materials and welding and can anyone recommend a good ally welder on the goldy?

cheers all and sorry for the silly questions

    2KK

1 its and open area so why not, you've got a fire extinguisher but get a fire blanket you can cover flareups when your cooking chips to go with the fish!
2 Buy foils and a extension tiller (PVC Pipe?) and lift the motor and sit forward to trim the boat so you can see and also flatten the wake, the 6 kn is hard work!
3 Why not get some gal mesh and use gal clamps to avoid stuffing the gal on the trailer.

    Cheers

Cooking is fine you just need to remember that gas is heavier than air so if you do have a gas leak you need to remove the gas from low areas. With an open boat this would be rather easy. I have seem all kinds of good idear for walk ways including cable tray, security mesh, alli and timber planks just let your imagination run with the materials available to you

I have taken a stove, pan and bacon on a trip before. Never ended up using it.

What scared me the most is the swell and also the thought of "what if somebody buzzes past me 10m away while I'm trying to do a feed", the stove, pan and bacon could have ended up anywhere.

I will probably try it again at some point but not without some modifications to make sure things dont go sliding around or falling over.

I love the foils on my boat and couldn't imagine not having them, get some.

We`ve been cooking on board for years, just be sensible about it , we usually cook up on the front deck , or get out on the bank. I`ve had foils on my boats and found they help low speed planing ,I had a stingray on my 4.5 and se200 sport on the 385 explorer. Don`t know about some of the cheaper options.Could you move a bit of extra weight forward to keep the nose down at low speed? If you are looking for some material for a walkway you might gey something at the tip shop a bit cheaper. I think I`d clamp it on and if that didn`t work then i`d weld .

Cooking is totally safe as long as you be careful of gas leaks.
There is nothing better thank a hot cuppa,a hot meal or cuppa soup.
have a small stove built into the side of my tinny and it is just unreal, one of the best things i fitted into this boat.
It folds down to use and folds away when finished with it.

thanks all for the replies, v v helpful. GB, re the foils, was considering the cheaper foils from BCF at $45 odd dollars or the SE200 at a much larger expense at $150 odd dollars. do you or anyone have an opinion on how much difference there would be. i know you only get what you pay for but ......it's all guesswork unless anyone has experience on a 3.9 mtr boat and same shape hull as the hornet

    thanks all

Re: cooking on board and other dumb questions

Hi 2KK , I got my se 200 from BCF but I had to wait til they come on special $99 . I could only find stingray junior in the U S A. I haven`t used the cheaper foils but I guess they will work as they increase the surface area of the cav plate and I think that the foils are also shaped like a wing to increase lift, just like on an aircraft (might be wrong though). Im not sure what size motor you have on the hornet ,I`m running a 20 Honda on the explorer trophy , pretty heavy motor plus battery on the transom and I thought I`d get a good quality unit . Gaz

Looks good Anthony but expensive considering it's appears to be two standard butane cookers joined together. The standard butane cookers are available from only $14 so $199 for this product is a little steep. I do like the look of it though with a nice sized cooking plate.
