    Exclamation Side Imaging - Interpretation

    Hi All

I've been using my Humminbird 998SI for about 8 months now - but up till the last week it lived on the bow for use while on the leccy while Impondment barra fishing....... which it was great .
Having said that - it was a waste when fishing the salt .... certainly a lot of money tied up for little use. Well last week I relocated it to the helm & it has been a revelation . Anyhow now I'm fishing the rust water - I'm seeing things that I am unsure of what they are.

So what do you reckon if we started a thread dedicated to Side Imaging where people can put up screen shots & they can be discussed - Maybe if there is enough interest the mods may make it a "sticky"

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Chris, I don't own a side imaging unit but i have been in a couple of boats that have them, so no means an expert on the topic.

I reckon the picture you have loaded here shows a rock wall or a pile of rubble, do you have any idea's ???

    Cheers,

    John.

The far right of the screen is the rise in the river bed ......... the other stuff was passing by in the water column - Are they fish ? ....... the normal sounder view shows a couple of fish

    Re: Side Imaging - Interpretation

On having another look and taking into account that you are in 38.4 feet of water and your side scan reaches out 28 feet to the right you can't see the bottom directly under the boat at the top of the screen whereas at the bottom of the screen you can see the bottom and the fact that it is sloping down means that the objects are in fact under the boat, and that the depth of water at the bottom of the screen is less than 38.4 feet perhaps around 25 feet of water?.
Don't know if they are fish or just suspended matter being pushed along with the tidal flow.

I would say that thay are fish moving about as you are at ancher it dose not show as a fish would when the boat is moving , it will also depend on chart speed and sensetivity it may be bait or even plankton . I run 798si h/bird

i reckon thats a great idea Chris as most if not all shots on the sounder reading thread are with 2d. So if anyone has some screen shots of side imaging . structure scan please post them up! i would love to see some shots personally.

Hi John! I'm no expert but perhaps if you change the colour palette to a different colour it may give you a different perspective of the image.

    Cheers

Why would the bottom number depth be different from the bottom chart depth, that doesn't seem right to me?
The 38.4 Ft doesn't even line up with any density change on the chart.
I think most of the stuff on both screens is crap in the water Nagg.
