hi all,
haven't posted in a while mostly due to poor fishing performance unfortunately. luckily thats changed. went to mud sunday the fifth for what has become an annual birthday pilgrimage for me. got to wello about 10 am. every bay was full bar 1 only half full so refrained from boxing them in and parked up the top of the hill. got to mud about an hour later (only 20 horsies unfortunately) and started battle plans. drifted around for about 4 hours for 3 squid and 1 cuttle which all went into the live bait bucket. went and anchored on the ne corner away from most of the traffic (there was plenty bombarding the grazier), dropped the berley pot in and put out 3 rods. live cuttle on 40lb braid, live squid on 30lb braid and a small dead cuttle on 20lb braid on a 2-6kg plastics rod with a $17 abu c222 eggbeater. about 5 oclock the live squid went off and i was rewarded with a foul hooked black tip shark . sunset came and went and i settled in for the long haul. set up the laptop to watch some tv which i often do when fishing as i find it easier to pass time and it helps exercise patience which is often the difference between a feed and hunger. just getting comfortable when the smallest outfit took off. i estimate a first run of at least 70m. another shark i figured as there was no head shaking happening. after a couple of minutes of strong runs and pump and wind i guessed maybe ray as a shark would usually have done me by now. a few more runs and more pump and wind i got a glimpse of colour which i picked for a ray underbelly. yet another run and winding and i saw it was no ray but quite a fish. thats when i started sweating as i had no problem with losing vermin but all of a sudden it was important to land it. another run (now i am worried about sharks!) and it was spent, cruising gently into the net. 83cm and 6.2kg was 9cm longer and 2kg heavier than my previous best which was caught outside.
cant wait to better it.
gotta go. mud awaits.
cheers
