Down imaging and Side imaging is it really worth the extra $
Evening,
This may have been done to death But I'am looking at getting a new Hummingbird sounder and I was wondering is this side and down imaging really worth the extra money. As you can now get a unit with either one of these features singularly or as a unit with both. So are they worth the extra money I would be using it in the salt water anyone with experience with them good or bad I would appreciate all honest opinions on them.
Thank you Gary

Hey Gary, I just picked up a Humminbird 798cxi HD SI and I can tell you its worth it for the water I fish. I was looking for a wreck today saw it on the side scan, moved the cursor over it, bookmarked it and then drove straight over it. The side scan on my unit has a depth limit of 45m but I am never in water deeper than that with a 4.3m tinnie and if I was just use it as a normal sounder. Cheers Mike

G/day Mike, Thanks for help the water I fish isn't real deep so 45mts would just about be maxium depth. From what I can find out the side imaging is the way to go so I think I will head that way .Thanks again Gary

SI is certainly a useful tool - specially if fishing structure where a overhead view is not possible. eg : The other night we were fishing a rock wall that is not visible at high tide - we were able to set the distance from the rock wall ( because we could see the base) & manoeuvre the boat into position to anchor . Fishing toward a bank is another ( bommies , wrecks ets) are also ideal for SI. The down scan also gives a different view & can pick fish up that are often missed. A SI unit is worth considering but what most of us have found the smaller units (HDS5s & 7 series humminbirds) do not have the definition - 8's seem to be more practical Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day ! Teach him how to fish & he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!
