Snuck out for a quick afternoon session, fished the river first, and struggled big time. I eventually picked up a few bream on Gulp minnows on the rock walls, but it was slow going. I got smoked by a good fish that could have been a big bream or snapper. Conditions were improving, and Mud was calling, so I made the call home to secure an extended leave pass and got lucky. Arrived at mud just before 4pm, and first cast I was onto something decent, awesome! Got him up, nice 55cm snapper, yes! how good is this!
He was followed by a heap of rat snapper, and a few pike. I was fishing two rods, the light outfit had 3lb line, 6lb leader and a 3" minnow. The medium outfit was 15lb fireline, 10lb leader and a 4" Minnow or 5" jerkshad. Action was fairly continuous on the light rod, with snapper after snapper nailing it. Nothing over about 28cm though. The rats were also hitting the bigger gulps, but not as regularly and not hooking up much, also not destroying the gulps as much. I ended up getting another legal on a 5" jerkshad that went 45cm. As the sun set, conditions pretty much glassed out. Beautiful evening, with not another fishing boat in site. Unfortunately as it got darker the bites dropped off. I got a couple more rats by charging up the glow in the nuclear chooks and lime tiger glows, but no more legals. The fish were still there on the sounder though.
Back at the ramp by 7.30pm. Great little session, Snapper for dinner tonight!
Cheers,
Matt
