Question Beach netters banned in SE Qld

Hi all, I heard a rumour yesterday that the pro netters working the beaches for mullet and other fish between Fraser and the Goldy are, or soon will be finished, aparently it's a government buyout or something.

Is this true ???, I'm sure Slider if it is true still hasn't stopped grinning - I know I am at the moment. Was up at Cooloola on Saturday for the day and managed a few quality dart but pondered the now well documented area abandonment issues caused by the pro's setting up camp near the mouth of the river and now imagine the possibilities moving forward.

I have absolutely nothing against any pro fisherman and support any sustainable way for them to make a living but just quietly if this is gospel then bring back the beach fishing of the 1980's. , I'm excited.

    Craig.

I hope it's true. It's well beyond time for prohibition of this slaughter by so called, "Professionals"

    Not true.

The Sunday Mail... 22nd May 2011, carried a report by Environment reporter Kathleen Donaghey.

In that article it says in part

" Commercial netting will be completely banned on the Fraser and Cooloola coasts under a State Government proposal that has infuriated the seafood industry. A discussion paper being prepared for Environment Minister Kate Jones recommends the areas should be saved for recreational fishing. "

The author of the paper is Lindsay Dines.

QSIA chief Winston Harris also stated in the article that, " Recreational fishing havens " should be considered case by case.

Not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing yet, but i wasn't complaining last week when i filled my chest freezer with enough mullet fillets to get me through the next few months of offshore fishing.Bloody good price at the moment....there's a flip side to every argument i guess.

There wont be a ban on any pro netter on Goldy beaches or further south.

Mullet might be sold wholesale at a price I can get (not disclosed) a lot better than retail price (profiteering middle people) and the most expensie part, the roe, is sold to middle eastern countries at a premium price.

This in turn generates income for the economy via exports but with the dollar being high, the exporters will suffer a little bit

The boys should be able to net all the mullet they can anywhere, any time.

The discussion heats up where Bream, whiting, flathead, taylor, etc get involved.

Thanks Phil - seems Lindsay has decided there's more than one way to skin a cat. Let's hope if the decision gets in at Cooloola that's it's the thin edge of OUR wedge for once.

i agree captain, they can have all the mullet they want and should be able to sell bycatch, but targetting whiting/tailor/bream should be completely off limits. what are the current licensing rules for beach netting of whiting etc. ?

This sounds like great news for the beach fishos, but from the the reports in the papers I hope something can be done about the reductions in numbers of pippis on the beaches.

I was up on Fraser a few weeks ago and my god I saw this guy collected pippis, he might have been collecting for a group of people but filling 2 20L buckets looked like a bloody lot to me......
I only collect what I need for a fish and what I don't use I normally eat for a snack with a glass of white wine that arvo, yummy..........

    Cheers

"THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO NET ALL THEY MULLET THEY CAN, ANYWHERE , ANYTIME."

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

    Here's a little lesson:

The humble mullet is the bottom of the food chain for Tailor, Mulloway, and the scraps from them for the bream.
Oh, and I THINK offshore mackerel and other have a taste for them also.

SO IF YOU NET ALL THE MULLET ANYWHERE ANYTIME THEN THE NUMBERS OF TAILOR, MULLOWAY, BREAM AND OFFSHORE SPECIES WILL DROP OFF.

    THAT'S LOGICAL

    LESSON OVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee and I have not mentioned beachnetting leaves the beach like a desert where you are lucky to catch a cold.

Ridiculous comments like " netting anywhere , anytime" are not helpful.
