Live mullet about 20cm long work well for me.
You will have to avoid the rafts of water hyacinth coming down the river though. I saw lots last Monday when driving home.

Water hyacinth is a freshwater floating weed that has been washed down with the recent heavy rains. Saw rafts of it 3m across floating down as i drove by last Monday.
