    Radio VHF/DSC

I am after a new radio for my boat, I have one but its in the cabin which has to be the most stupid place to have a radio installed (nice one seafarer)

So I am after one that isn't overly large, and can I use the same antenna as the one in the cabin or should I get another antenna just for it,

    Budget is $400

    Cheers

I have the ICOM M-412 flush mounted at the helm. It is fairly small and it works well. It has the DSC function which is a good safety feature

    Hi Brett,
I have a new Garmin DFC VHF radio for sale in the classified adds on this site at the moment. It is capable of flush mounting, waterproof and much less than $400. Check it out and if you want this please send me a PM.
    Regards to all Dick

Why don't you do what I did, my VHF is down below, so I bought a waterproof 5 watt handheld from the US and keep it by the wheel. If I need longer range transmission I go below and us the 25 watt unit.

Fishon had a Standard Horizon HX280s for under USD100 plus freight. Good value.

Lowrance lvr 250 good buying at $245.. class d dsc, rotary channel change and the ability to use the mic as a speaker, great when the winds howling...

I would fit an additional aerial.. gives you then the redundancy

    Thanks for the tips,
I am still looking for a Radio, I have read heaps of reviews but they all make them seem bullet proof but we all know reviewers don't allways say all the facts.
If others can say what they use and if they have had any problems as the radio has to be reliable in my mind.

    Cheers

$400 should get you a GME and antenna to suit I would think.
