    Good headlamps

Hi all ...... my much loved Mako cap (with built in LEDs) blew off my head the other night while out on the bay ....... sadly we couldn't find it .
anyhow - while not the best headlamp ..... it did the job & was very convienient but now am looking for somethying a bit better. I've had a couple of cheaper ones but they are pretty bulky & heavy .
    Any suggestions ?
I've had a look at the Led Lenser H7r (170 Lumens - battery pack is seperate on the back of the headband , rechargable ....focusing beam , dimmable) ...... I should be able to land one for under $100 (rrp $170ish). These certainly look good and a couple of mates with older models like theirs .

Look forward to some other suggestions or opinions on the H7r

    Cheers .

    Hey Chris,
Just trading up on my old petzl combo, been great for many a year, but now im going with a h14 led lenser (3 in 1), my mate got one and i was very impressed with it. They seem to be good quality and pick this up for $120, should get it next week.

Cannot speak of that one but i have been using this one for 5 years and it's a quality brand/unit and regulated so doesn't snuffout rechargeable battery's fast. I couldn't do without it, spotlights well 50m away, has a quality LED, doesn't care if it gets wet.

and this is the one I plan to purchase soonish, because of the red and the lower lumens the eos is too bright for dark of night fishing stuff even on it's lowest setting, but it's ok for camping stuff.

If you are fishing near your mates I would steer clear of anything too bright as when you glance at them they cop an eyefull. I am currently using an eveready one that is very light, waterproof and has a red or white light. Batteries last for ever. I would imagine there should be some good light stuff on ebay that would do the trick

    Re: Good headlamps

I do a lot of night work and have tried them all from cheap to expensive. This is what I have found

    Best Cheapie
-Energiser, single LED yellow in colour pretty good but sucks the battery life

    Best Expensive
-LED Lenser, great, dimmable and adjustable light either spot or spread. Very bright
    -Black Diamond Storm

I think Petzyl were the bees knees but there is some good stuff around now.

    Re: Good headlamps

I do like the idea of having the majority of the weight at the back ..... less likley to fall off your head when you look down ......... that is the problem with many of the headlamps I've tried .

Nagg, not sure how deep you like to go into this stuff but this site helped me years ago, really good advice, hope still. http://www.flashlightreviews.com/fea...yers_guide.htm and here is my ausfish original headlamp post with link to comparisons. http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...ight=princeton

    Re: Good headlamps

Thanks for your help everyone ....... there were certainly a few good ones to look at
I ended up going with the Led Lenser H7r ..... It had some pretty good features which made it a bit of a stand out
*Rechargable via 240Vlt or USB - but can be substituted with 3xAAA batteries
*easy to use dimmer - can go from 170 lumens down to 1 lumen
*speed focus beam - very quick & easy
    *beam up to 180M - we'll see

The burn time is OK - 54hrs on low

I managed to pick one up locally (Syd) landed for $95 ..... which is around half the RRP - so pretty happy! ....... otherwise it would have been the Princeton Tec

    Re: Good headlamps

    Hi All

After using the H7r a couple of times now - well ..... it kicks butt & is simply the best headlight I have seen used or have used.
Charged simply via 240vlt or USB - it has it over the rest then & there.

The beam / ease of use & flexibility is just awesome.
I got the opportunity to track a hooked soapy jew last night under headlamp & I was simply blown away ....... the ducks nuts!

I wouldn't call this as a wet weather light as I can see that there could be water ingress in the battery pack ....... so I also ordered a black diamond for use in the rain
It will be interesting to see how it compares to the black diamond (fully waterproof) that I have on order (170 lumens Vs 100)
Ya just need good lights when fishing of a night

Seriously .... if you think the Energizers are good ( & I've used em) - you would gobsmacked by these H7s ..... quite simply - no comparison , one is a joke & one is sensational .......The sensational ... its not the energizer. .... chalk & cheese.
