Re: Read it and....Weep (a)
Just back! What a typically great week. Rat barra around in the usual plauge proportions on the flats at the mouth of the Pine River. We got (between 4 boats) about 600 over 3 days with quiet a few better fish to 73cm and some good kings as well. Plenty of 50+ Jacks and Fingermark in Young Creek. Gold Bombers and skitter pops the stand-out lures.
Big SW swell put paid to the usual houseboat mooring at Red Cliffs so this was day trip by tender option only for the last 2 days. No jelly prawns this year and the fresh which usually flows from the clay line at Red Cliffs had finished, as a consequence the beach fishing was pretty shut down with a few giant herring and Quieenies on fly but no barra or blue salmon this year...it's always about the jelly prawns here and the big SW swell had put paid to them.
Blue water action was just OK down Pera way. We got a few longtail, had a few shortened up by the everpresent sharks but again the swell had shut things down. Apparently "going off" a few days earlier and we go every year same time and have some good years/great years and this is the first year we have not had mindblowing blue water action so we were due!
Back next year for 10 days and I can not recommend the Weipa Houseboat operations more highly. Absolutely the ugliest houseboats in Australia and absolutely the best, most functional, purpose built floating fishing shacks ever designed, coupled with the best service anyone could ever wish for....all at a 1/3rd of the price of a guided operation.
And speaking of the "guides" operating up there, What The?....pack of rudest ^#$ .
A simple wave as they passed would do wonders but apparently don't like the great unwashed on the houseboats "invading" their turf.
If anyone is heading up drop me a line and I will give you the inside scoop, along with some GPS marks for a truely "bucket list" experience.
KC
