I think you may need to re-read the rule!
note - the all round white light must have a 1m height clearance from anything else in the boat.
The all round white light must be the highest part of the vessel, it cannot be obscured by anything, IE a Head, bimini poles etc. If you have aBimini it must be above the bimini, If you have a centre console and your head is higher than the all round light then it needs to be higher.
I have spoken with Water police re this issue and it must be the highest point on your vessel, Its stupid cause in my tinny when i sit down the all round light is highest, if i stand up then i obscure the light, You can be fined for this!!! Long argument but they gave me a warning.

seriousy chaps we should all know this lot in detail...but.... most do not....at least those on this thread are making an effort.
The boating and fishing guide is free for the asking at most boating shops and tackle stores while it is print.....we should all have a coppy in the boat with the beacon to beacon or whatever.
All this information is available from the marine safety orginisations on line.
there remain some confusion.
larger vessels carry a number of white lights and they have to be changed between at anchor and underway.
BUT
most of us will only carry 1 white light, and it should always be refeered to as the "all round white" to save confusion..and it should be on at all times when visability is low.
the red and green should be on while underway...and they can if displayed and read correctly tell you many things.
1. that the boat is underway or drifting
2. where the front is
3. where you are in relation to that boat.
It matters not if you are drifting backward or sideways, you still want to know where the front of the other boat is
It is also wise to either look at the light requirements from the source "coll' regs" either on line of in the small ships manual.
ya just need to read the whole section and take it step by step it is not all that hard.
the current reg requires the all round white ( when carried in leiu of masthead, stern and anchor lights) to be borne on the fore and aft centreline and at least 1 meter higher than the red and green, unobstructed and visable all round at all times..
By the way they are enforcing this.....after that prang in Sydney harbour they have all got uppity about it....they wrote hundreds of tickets in a couple of days down the port a while ago.
cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
