First I must find the weed

    Hey there fellow anglers,

Over the years I have sought and recieved much appreciated advice on catching squid on the inside of Moreton Island. I posted the results of a pretty successful trip around mid year in 2010 but have been unable to get out again more reently.

    That is, till today.

I've read and been told that there are "weed beds" - 100m wide, stretching from Bulwer to Cowan.

I got over there today with my son and all we could find was sand!!!!!!!!!!!

Water clarity was great (could easily see starfish in 5m) - start of the run-in tide - and we drove around in water from 3m to 8m deep - but no weed to be seen.

Of course, after about 6m you can't see bottom and it gets very dark anyway.

We cast and retrieved, and had some set lines out, just 'bouncing' with the movement of the boat, but didn't get a strike. I suspect that we need to find the habitat first, otherwise it's very pot-luck.

So - does anybody have any tips - what to look for - where to look - what weed actually looks like.

Without sounding like a smart arse I think I have the right info on technique - it's just finding an appropriate spot to use it.

Of course, any other advice or comment is very welcome.

    Cheers,

    Steve

I know me bad and not very helpful at all, i didn't lie though if that's the sort of weed being sought after.

The weed is quite short and pale green so that the patches of weed look like slightly darker smudges scattered over the white sandy areas of the visible bottom before the drop off into the shipping channel. A lot of our local seaweeds tend to grow more during the winter and die off in the summer, so they may become more visible over the next few months.

    Hi Steve,

What you are doing/saying is correct!

Unfortunately the weed beds you are referring to no longer exist.

I am not an expert but have put it down to the recent flooding/fresh water in Moreton bay and am unsure if the fresh water has killed off the grass in this section of the bay or it has silted over the weed beds that were once prominant there.

Either way they are gone presently and all we can do is hope that they come back at some stage down the track..

You are doing the right things, have a look in some other areas of the bay for squid there are plenty further south along Moreton Island, inside of north straddie and some of the bay islands, banks around rous channel and the list goes on..

You could also try fishing a few of the well lit piers around the place in the middle of winter also for pencil squid..

    Good luck..

    Thanks Watto,

I've go to say I was wondering - I'm not getting any younger you know.

Mostly I put in at Scarby or Spinnaker Sound near Bribie, so some of the spots you mention are a bit of a drive.

I have heard there are weed banks near Sandstone Point - maybe I'll give that a go on a good tide.

I must admit, one of the big attractions of Moreton is the water clarity, not something you tend to get in the Passage!!!

    Thanks for the heads-up mate.

No prob's champ and yes unfortunately they are some distance travelling from those ramps..

Compass adjustment buoy and also cockle banks when the winter whiting are running are also areas where you should drag a couple of squid jigs around!

Water clarity is another big factor with squid and I think why they don't turn up around the closer grounds until winter time when we get the south westers and the water becomes clear also..

You could try Shorncliffe, Redcliffe, Woody Point and Bongaree jetties in the next few weeks also..should be starting to show up around these then if not already..

    Happy hunting..
