    Wivenhoe bass

Hi Guy`s, had a ball with the bass last year before the floods hit, long casts hopping lures back to the boat in around 40 feet of water. Wondering if anyone has had any success of late, or have our bass had the same fate as barra up north, over the wall. Cheers Tiger

    Top Fish Tiger
Also a great photo to hang on to. It is also worth noting that it is a clean looking fish without the fin rot appearance and damage that we see below the dam from those that survive the estuarine version of " the giant drop".

Nice bass sea tiger! Few questions for you though. With your long cast technique, do you find a school and cast into it or try random areas but the right depth? We tried a few trips last winter and only managed a few bass so we really haven't figured it out yet… We mainly trolled HB's in around 20 - 30 foot of water and I kept my eyes glued on the sounder for schools, but very rarely saw more than a blip out there… Had more fun with the catfish then the bass

What style lure works best for your 'hopping' technique? Is that bouncing the lure back across the bottom. If the fish tend to hug the bottom in Big W, no wonder I am missing them...

Keen to do some more paddling there this winter, but definatley need a technique change!

    Thanks Guy`s,
Daki23, yeah went to sommerset about a month ago for a crayfish trip, only fished for about an hour for two bass on the troll.
Tenzing, plan to do a river trip when water clears abit more, wivenhoe bass all seem to be in very good condition (FAT)
Werewolf, I find schools of bass on the sounder, drop over marker boy. While searching for fish i always troll a couple of lures, get more fish trolling very early in the morning, they seem to hang deeper once the sun gets to high. Soft plastics with plenty of weight to get to the bottom, blades, crankbaits, anything will work so long as your lure can reach the fish. My eye`s also glued to sounder, once you find a school, double figures of bass can be had, mark it on G.P.S, they tend to hang in the same area, week after week. Vary speed when bouncing lure back, or just a slow wind back to boat with little burst`s. Alot of water out there = alot of searching, good luck, i too will have to try and find them again. Cheers Tiger

    Cheers sea tiger

Thanks for the tip RE casting into schools though. On the few occasions I've seen interesting things in the sounder I normally just keep trolling over the spot.

    HI Werewolf,
Fish last year were in 37 feet of water, took my brother there for his first time, with both his lures going off as soon as we reached the mark, a gold blade did the damage for him just sitting in the rod holder, while he fought another fish on a soft plastic.

Hornet- billy, Sent you a p.m. but would`nt go through, will try to keep you posted how i go on river bass. cheers Tiger

    Re: Wivenhoe bass

Was out at Big W last Sunday and it was dirty as I've ever seen it. Used many lures for nil result. Will need the water to clear-up a bit before I head out there again. Maybe July before it's clears up.

Attached is pic over at Platypus Cliffs - note the water colour.

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Re: Wivenhoe bass

Hi guys not my go usually but my son put me onto a place a few weeks back and he said I couldn't miss.... Yeah well this is my 18 year old son... God forbid - love him thou - my penance for my childhood I expect.

Well fished for 50 mins first trip for two - biggest 53 cm and back they went of course.

There is a closed season for bass I believe starting soon or now????? Can anyone enlighten me ???

I know I could look up the Gov web site but who knows if they would have it right... At least on this site it's the right advice.

    Cheers

    Pete,
Closed season in Qld is 1st June to 31 st August.
This does not include the dams. The dams have no closed season.
