Thread: New reel time!

    New reel time!

After losing all my reefs in the recent floods, Insurance is nice enough to pay for some more for me.

Im initially looking at a overhead and a spin reel.

Overheads mainly for bottom bashing, Im looking at Dawia Saltist 2 speed conventional, Or the Level wind.
I was contemplating a shimano Torsa 20. Is it worth the upgrade?
Then I came across Accurate reels. The BX-500/600 looks fantastic.
Which of the above would be the better choice?
    or any other suggestions? Jiggmaster?
    Budget is about to $6-800ish

Second reel is a new Spinning reel.
I had a 14000 upgraded spheros which was great.

My choices are the usual Saltist 6500 or saragosa debate.
Or what about the daiwa catalina 6500? whats the difference between it and the saltist?

    cheers

    Re: New reel time!

The Torsa 20 is a top reel for bottom fishing/ trolling and live baiting. I have had a 20 for five years or more and recently got a single speed Talica 8 ( mini Torsa) which knocked over a 28kg YFT on its first outing. The Talica 12 two speed would be a sweet thing and a little cheaper than the Torsa with the added bonus of a low cog all at less weight. Happy shopping.

As far as your choice of spin reels go if you have a choice between the saltist, saragosa or catalina the catalina 6500 wins that one hands down as far as quality goes. It depends on what you are using is for though. The 6500 catalina doesnt come in a high retrieve rate. Mine is used for jigging and limited bottom bashing, i would use it for cubing and trolling if needed as well.
For the overheads i can only say that i am not that happy with the drag curve of the saltist, so much so that i am thinking of selling mine after only a couple of uses and trying an avet or similar.

    Thanks guys for the reply.

I think i will go with the catalina 6500. Slower retrieve is better suited for all around fishing. I do popper fish and jig a bit but after using a spheros the lower ratio doesnt seem to worry me that much

    As to the overheads.

I think I will splurge and go either a Torsa, Jiggingmaster or accurate. I'll have to look at each in the flesh to see if they sit nice on a reel. i hate fat overheads. but they are all lever drags, not sure how that sits with bottom bashing all day..

Whats your thoughts on lever drag for bottom? I know you can pre-set your drag easier, but if bottom bashing I do find myself in and out of freespool often to stay on the bottom when drifiting. Would this potentially hurt the lever drag doing it up and and down hundreds of times a day?. with a star drag you set it and forget and its much easier to flip into free-spool

    Re: New reel time!

Depends how deep you intend to fish but the Torsa16 or 16n would work well in water to 100-150m beyond that a 20 would be better. On the 20 I have 500yds of 50lb powerpro with room for 100yd mono top-shot if needed.

From what I read the Accurates are great reels but reliant on good maintenance to keep them working well.

    Re: New reel time!

I just purchased a Talica 16 II for $482. I was looking at a Torsa 20 but thought the Talica was far better value for the $$$$$.

    The ++++++

The Talica 16 is lighter, holds more line and is a 2 speed.

    The --------

The Talica does not have the interchangeable drag system

Didn't you get a 20lb mono cam in the box with the rod clamp?

The cam that comes fitted with the reel is at maximum for the reel and heavy braid.

    Re: New reel time!

I'm not sure you would need a two speed over head to start with. The Torsa is a tank and with the big gears it tends to want to roll over a bit in your hand. It's a great reel but the lighter Talica single speed would be better. I also like the Saltiga overheads a lot. The wife has one and so does the brother in law. They are an awesome reel and you will not go wrong with one of those.

Not sure of your line size and depth with the spinning reel but the 6500 size Daiwa is pretty big. Maybe the 4500 size would be better as you woud fit 300 yards of 50lb braid on a 4500 Daiwa or a 6000 size Shimano.
The next reel up from the Saltist is the Seagate. A great reel and then it's another step up to the Catalina.
In the Shimano area it's the Gosa, the Twinpower FC, then the Twinpower SW.

Personally though if it's insurance I would get a Stella 8000 or 10000 SW and never look back.

The Talica comes with a 20lb mono cam for sailfish and the like. Different type of cam to the Torsa in that it is in two pieces where as the Torsa is one. I think Shimano has learned a lesson not to make expensive cams which may or may not sell and have made a cheaper alternative in the Talica disc.

Screw your cam out and have a look at the disc. The other should be in the plastic bag that the rod clamp came in.

If that's the case, then the answer is NO......??????? Or did I, I better have another look in the BOX.

Anyone own and use a Jigging master reel? do they have that god awful clicking noise when you wind the handle? how about Talica or Torso? i hate it so much I refuse to buy a reel thats noisy winding in...

I decided on the Catalina 6500, spool it up with 80lb YGK. I should be able to stop those cape york GT's....eventually..lol

Yes, my PE8 has the clicking anti reverse, but JM do have a mute AR system in their new models.
