Wet or Dry?

I'm in the middle of servicing my Torium 16. I had to replace one of the washers with a carbontex as I snapped the old one cleaning it (very brittle) . While picking up the washer from Jones's, Neil said that the drag must be run dry. From the looks of mine it seemed to be a wet system but I may have added the grease myself. Alan Tani seems to push the wet system for it but with Carbontex all through. Given I have a mix of old and new washers should I run wet or dry.

I would be tempted to run the washers wet. If the remaining washers have been running wet and the drag has been running well i would not change it. If it aint broke then don't fix it attitude if you will. In the past i have found that carbontex washers have run better wet in all my gear. I run spin gear on everything these days so unsure about how it will affect an overhead but see no reason for it to be different as far as smooth performance of the washer is concerned.

Mate all of my reels run carbontex except my DC calcuttas (dartainium)and everyone is greased with Cals reel grease........

I have a Torium 30 and a Saltist 30 both are running wet drags and have for 4-5 years and no issues.

All of my reels get oiled etc when required so the chance of them staying dry is pretty remote,grease also protects the main gear IMO.

I run all my carbontex drag washers wet......that is a smear of drag grease on the washers,dont overload them with drag grease
I think it goes this way...............Dry drag wshers will give you a higher drag setting ,,,But wet is smoother ...?or that is what it feels like to me

Mate you should not mix carbontex with the old washers as they will work differently and your drag may become unrealiable, change all the washers to carbontex. Wet is best and more smoother

Dartanium should be kept dry or you will get binding or sticky drag. If you only have one carbontex washer in there, I would run them all dry.
Carbontex will operate very well wet or dry but not the dartanium ones that come stock with Toriums.
Optimum senario would be run all carbontex with a little Cal`s grease though.

Hey Reggy i put cals in a 200dhsv Curado stock dartainium drag a few years ago and it's caught quite a few fish since then and it has'nt gone sticky at all.....still good as if not slightly smoother.

With the Torium you could have a carbontex one side and stock the other as they are on opposite sides of the maingear and not a drag stack like the crappy saltist i have........which by the way has carbontex kit at $60 put through it and still cant pull much more than 6kg........pretty shitty considering my Calcutta 300 conquest i bought for my PNG trip pulls 11kg out of the box and are rated to 7kg stock.......all 3 conquests we imported pulled 11kg from new.

Not much choice Ken. I could only get the one washer on short notice. I will replace all of the others when I get back from my trip. The only other option was to put back the broken pieces of the Dartanium one
