How to work out sale price on boat / motor

    Hi,

I am currently looking at installing a centre console on my tiller steer boat but I am also thinking that it may be worth just selling the boat and adding the upgrade $ for a 2nd hand boat. If I go tiller steer I may also have to change my motor to a 2nd hand electric start one.

Problem is that I have no idea of how to determine what is a reasonable price on the package or just the motor. Other than just taking my boat around to local dealers is there an equivalent to the redbook for boats?

My boat is a 4.3m seajay with a tiller steer 35HP Evinrude Elan, both are 1997 models. Boat has a couple of minor dings (but no punctures) and motor has been serviced yearly and gets about 10hours work a year.

Trailer is also 1997 Belco in great condition with new axle and bearings.

    Cheers

i reckon rosco is maybe a smidgin high on the money there pete, i've been keeping a pretty keen eye on the prices because i've been in the market for a tinny recently. your motor is probably worth mid to high $1k's depending on it's condition just like rosco says. but the full boat/motor/trailer is probably going to be lucky to be worth much more than $4-4.5k in the current market if you're after a reasonably quick sale. have a look through all the usual sales sites ie. boatpoint, trading post, ebay and gumtree and you'll see what i mean, there's some pretty good prices in there and even those ones aren't selling. for example there's a quintrex 420 widebody dory 2002 with a 2002 30hp mariner at a boat yard for a shade under $5k, realistically you'd probably buy it for $4.5k. that's what you're going to be up against mate. even brand new hulls of your size are only in the low $2ks and a new 30hp motor is around $3k, then you've got to buy a trailer. at least you're buying in the same market as you are selling in hey.

I was quoted around $7300 at the boat show for a 4.4m seajay territory hull (has a full floor and casting deck)

I went through the same exercise last month. I decided to sell my 3.95 with all safety gear and electrics including electric motor and step into a new 4.4 sea jay territory. I thought the trade was a bit light on but the deal you can do on a new boat and motor today are spectacular. With the Aussie dollar so high at the moment i have managed to secure many nice accessories at unbelievable prices. It really is only money on paper. Not much for your trade but not much to purchase a new out fit as well compared with a few years ago.

Private sale, $4000 - $4500 depending on how quick you want to sell.
I'm imagining this to be slightly less than 1/2 the new price.
So considering the rig is 13-14 years old, personally I'd reckon if you got that price you'd be doing OK.

I'm looking at selling my near new Sea Jay 4.55 Magnum with a centre console and 40hp Tohatsu and Dunbier trailer.Got a Lowrance sounder/GPS combo.

The only reason I'm selling is because of a change in circumstances since buying it all and fitting the console etc.The change being that of wanting a smaller boat to be able to manage it better and get out more often because of health and wealth matters. Will lose money but gain in the long run.Only used the boat 3 times and the motor has not even been run-in..done about 3 hours.

Prices of tinnies seem to have come down. Saw 4.2 m (think it was a seajay) a couple of weeks ago in the local yard here, with a 30 hp electric start merc on a dunbier sports trailer with a floor and casting deck for $7,900 which in my estimate is bloody cheap as a year ago the same set up would have been I am sure would have been close to $2000 dearer.

hey dignity, the big step up is when you try to put a 4 stroke or an etec on the back, it takes the exact same size tinny from being $7-8k to $11-12k, the price difference is ridiculous.
