Thread: Red claw pot regs?

Flex, you are right but it is not silly. It is in possession. So if you have your in possession limit sitting in the freezer why are you out catching more of them? It's not a daily limit.

Im not a good enough fisherman to have more than my possession limit.
And I dont go out to catch loads more If I do
But we can all pretent we are all obey the law to the letter and then jump down a guys throat at hint of him keeping a fish to feed his family.

I bet you 99% of guys on this forums have more than their possession limit in the freezer of one species or another, not by huge amounts with 6 freezers down the back, but a few here and their. but I bet you 90% of those blokes are big on conservation and catch and release their fair share aswell as adhere to bag/size limits for each trip

Here's an example for you. Game fisherman often have frozen wolf herring rigs ready to go, they go out and catch a few in preparation of the season. I guarantee every single one of them has more than 20 in their freezer...

    lets not pretend here eh..

    Re: Red claw pot regs?

hey guys as some people have correctly stated qld fisheries rules clearly state the phrase:

"a person must not possess or use at one time more than four canister traps, four collapsible traps, four dillies, four funnel traps or four round traps, or more than four of these traps in any combination."
    reference: http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/28_3023.htm

so just be aware that if you are carrying extra pots they could technically ping you for it. I suppose it depends on the mood of the fisheries inspector on the day.

    Cheers potsy

    Re: Red claw pot regs?

a mate was up at somerset a few weeks back , he had 2 mates from interstate with him so he asked if he could borrow 4 of my pots to go with his 8 ( total 3 men on board)

he tells me he got pulled up by the fisheries and they told him each person on board must have max 4 pots marked with there name (not his) or he could fine him. he had 8 with his name.

he also had milk bottle floats on some which he was told would be fined for next time. after they got his details and a warning they were off, not wanting a fine he didn't argue.

does this mean you have to change the float name to suit who is on board?

I see this on the web site about the milk bottle floats but not about 4 pots per person naming deal?

    http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/28_3023.htm

    Marking traps and set lines

Anyone who uses a trap or set line for freshwater fishing must have a tag on the trap or set line showing the owner´s surname and address. If the trap is not fixed to something stationary above the water level while being used, it must have a light coloured float attached.
The float must feature the owner´s first name and surname and be at least 15 cm in each of its dimensions. A two or three-litre milk container may be used as a float. A set line must be attached to a stationary object such as a branch, wooden stake or boat.

Spot on Ben, The old milk bottle thing just crops up again and again.
The dpi web site as you included in your post clearly states two or three liter milk bottle is ok but,,,,, only in fresh water. And I will continue to use them in Fresh Water. I had this out with the Fisheries at the recent Boat show.

As for marking your pots, each individual has 4 only and must have that persons name on the float, and name and address on the pot.

My crab/cray pot floats have Jean and John on them to clearly identify my wife and I as individual owners.

To overcome the problem of Min. 150mm. in each dimension for saltwater use we use 4 liter water bottles.

The reason we use plastic water bottles is because we travel a lot and don't carry our floats from place to place.

I think if everybody got a copy of the regs. they would be much better informed.

    Re: Red claw pot regs?

I have 12 pots and mostly take 2 different mates or family members every time I go out also, changing names on floats and tags each time will be a pain... better then a fine i guess.

I have camped out there with a group of people but just my boat, we took turns at going out to check ALL the pots every few hours, would this also be illegal? can I give someone permission to check and collect from my pot? im guessing i cant if that person already has 4 pots in?

Thumbs down Re: Red claw pot regs?

i was told by fisheries that i can have any amount of traps i want but i must only have 4 in the water at one time also i can have my name on all traps as long as there is enough people for the amount you have in . also you can buy traps that are bigger than they should be and without rings at flea markets and tackle shops and they try to tell you they are legal i reckon fisheries should pounce on them
