Navionics charts on your smart phone

Has anyone tried using this as a back-up to your chart plotter?
Nokia's Ovi Store has the full Australian charts for $12

    Hi Kero

Ive been using the app on my iphone for over 6 months. i find it comparable in accuracy to my mates Garmin GPSMAP421. this is if u zoom in on the map. at a low magnification (zoomed out) you can see more of the map but the red triangle that is your boat is then covering up some details on the map. i got my app for $14 and would buy it again. its a great app and you can email the recorded track to yourself and view it on google earth.

I use mine on the Apple as a trip planner at times (ie time waster) but I like the idea of it as a backup GPS.
    Great value for money.

How do you get the track onto GE Charlie09?

    Hi Ozscot

u need to record and save the track on ur devise. tap on the yellow track line and a box comes up. tap on that and another bigger box comes up. press on the track that u have recorded and saved. on the next screen press on share. press share on the next screen and enter ur email address. then press send. on ur computer go to ur email and u will see the email that u have sent yourself. open the email and click on the download link. save this to ur computer when asked. go to where ur programs download (mine is the download file). double click on this and u should see GE open with the red track line it. this is how i do it on my iphone.

let me know how it goes

I'm sure that I'd more use it as a time waster aswell, planning before I even get on the water.

Just returned from a trip from Gold Coast to Airlie Beach on a sailing cat. One of the crew members had a Ipad loaded with $40 Navionics software, bloody amazing we could have navigated the whole way by Ipad if we wanted. He also had a App that covered all of the ships awaiting loading at Gladstone and Haye Point telling what ship it was , its size etc and showed its position on the Ipad in the navionics maps.

OK! So I've gone and spent up big on these $12 charts.
They appear to work pretty well on the phone (Nokia N8) and have a lot of detail too.
Now I'll just have to try it out on the water and compare it to my chartplotter.
    I'm happy!

Re: Navionics charts on your smart phone

I've have the Navionics app on my iPhone for a while now, it seems to be just as accurate as my basic boat GPS. And at the price why not.

Re: Navionics charts on your smart phone

Does anyone have the Navionics app on Android tablets? Does it work as well as the Ipad?
and are there any other marine plotter apps for Android?
Ive read the Navionics for Android doesnt have pinch zoom as per ipad?

sorry for the 20 questions-looking at buying and Android tablet. Not keen on ipad due to no USB.

Re: Navionics charts on your smart phone

do you need to be connected to the network for the maps to reload? Ie. like you do with google maps? I've got the app on my iphone and like Ozscott use it all the time for planning trips (dreaming) but have never tried it out the reef where there is no coverage.

Re: Navionics charts on your smart phone

I dont think you need coverage to use the Navionics - I will put it into Plane mode and try. How good would this be on an IPAD mounted sideways on the dash in a HD case...very very sweet and cheap navigation. Would not have all the bells and whistles like a dedicated chartplotter, but the amount of real estate the screen would cover would be sweet.
