    Engels freezing performance

All, thinking of takeing 2 35 litre engels to fraser instead of a small chest freezer. Do engels freeze ice, fillets etc ok when run of mains or Gen power. Ie do they freeze better on mains than what they do on 12 volt.

They do freeze better on mains ...... but it will still take 24hrs to freeze a 2 kg block of ice ( without opening the freezer)

My 38 L Engel freezes great. The only problem is you can load them with to much warm fillets or warm water and they will struggle, just the same as your home freezer if you fill them with warm goods. Camp freezers are easier to over load, they seem to not work as well because there is no frozen stuff inside them to help pull the temp down. does that make sense ?.

I used my Engel to freeze fillets/make 2L ice cream container Ice off a honda generator for 10 days off Gladstone.

Had it on Freeze full of block ice for a day or two beforehand, (plus 2days on 12v/cig lighter travel) to makesure temp pulled right down before loading with warm stuff.

Must say after a couple of days it struggled with making ice overnight, as the fillets started to fill up... so ended up only using for fillets/bait. All good.
Even when the genie ran out of fuel. (we left it off for a couple of hours most nights cause it was next to the bbq & was interrupting the serenity...yeah I know it was a honda quite as...but after about 4days of hearing it non-stop...just wanted some peace at beer o'clock...was too stuffed to hear it off the night...lol)

If only using for making Ice it would be ok, just not loading hot fillets as well.
Dedicate each freeze for one job, ice or fillets

Probably a bit late for your trip, but for what it's worth - if you have enough power try setting your engel up like a little snap freezer for pulling down your fillets.
Don't bulk pack them, keep some temporary air gaps around them, and most importantly get hold of a little 12v computer fan.
The old superkool (forerunner to the evakool I have now) had the freezer plate rolled up rather than spread around the walls of the freezer. On top of the roll was a little fan. It had an old school micro refrigeration compressor that was a bit power hungry, but it froze stuff much better than any other portable fridge I've had before or after, and I put that down to the air circulation.

If it is a 3 way (240V, 12V, And Gas) dont leave it on gas in your car, as it will cause a build up of carbon monoxide (and carbon dioxide) and may kill you. A trap for heaps of people who dont know. Has happened before, it was winter so he had the windows up and......all over. Doing my gas block at tafe atm. A heads up!!!!
