    Mangrove Jacks Maroochydore/mooloolaba

    Hi all,

I have only ever caught two jacks and they were only small. I would like to target them with livies or Sp. Is it to late to try for them. Im just not shore where to start. Location, leader, rod kg ECT. Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks fishinwahbee

Not sure on how prolific they are around your area mate but i use mullet, herring or prawn for livies which can land a heap of other species as well. The main rig i use is a 40-50cm or so leader about the 40-50 pound with a no.1-3 bean sinker, no. 8 swivel, and up to a 4/0 gamakatsu circle or livebait hook. Sometime if the current is slack i'll go no or very small (like a split) sinker and chop off the tail of the bait (stops them swimming off to quick, and seems to work better for me regarding hits whether its because they are bleeding and giving off more stress signals not sure) them lob it as close to the structure whether its under the mangroves, fallen tree or rockwall ect, as possible.

Rod is 4-8 kilo and line is 15 pound.

also try night and i prefer targetting them at the time when the current is at its slowest. say an hour before and an hour after of the top or bottom of the tide... i also seem to get my bigger jacks on the late afternoon low tide.. just my preference.. but yeah all those baits work fine.. except i use a bit heavier line. up to 30pound.. just because on livies around where i fish we have nailed some hefty fish..
    good luck mate

The week before the first of the summer storms is always the peak bite period for me each yr. Usually around the 2nd or third week in October most years.
Jacks are pretty common captures from late Sept through to April usually.
Winter time jacks are generally very good fish and hard to learn their habits but are targettable for those that pay very good attention to detail.
Last winter scored me two very good jacks in the depths of the chill targetting jew.
    Jack.
