There are several submarine cables shown on paper charts, in particular between the mainland and the moreton bay islands.

Most of them are power cables, there may be a few communication cables.

These submarine cables run for thousands of KM's, they are optical fibre.

There are several between Aus & NZ, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, USA, and a few other places I can't remember.

Those big submarine cables the overseas ones are pretty deep, and they realy only leave from a couple of places.......there are some fibre optics and there are still som old copper cables still operating......., often these are burried quite deep near shore.........they are generally no bother to small boaties.

But there are heaps of smaller submarine cables in our creeks, rivers and bays.

Some of these are in quite shallow water, some are just lying on the bottom......and small boaties should be aware of them a avoid anchoring near them.......in creeks and rivers they are often marked on the shore with warning signs.

If you hook up on one of these with an anchor, one way or another you may get a large unpleasant surprise.

    cheers
