    Moreton Bay Sheltered Fishing Spots

Hi guys, we are taking out a 6m polycraft 599 over easter hoping to fish all around moreton bay and camping on the island. My friend said we might get some winds on at least one of the days so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a few decent spots that are out of the wind, sheltered by Moreton Island. I think the winds are going to be South Easterlies.

Also can anyone confirm what the long term forecast is at this stage? I can't seem to find any reports for the saturday or sunday.

Hi Coodgee, the forecast first - try seabreeze.com.au and also the BOM website, you can obtain 1 week forecasts for wind by clicking on the relevant charts. This where seabreeze gets its 1 week forecast from.

It is Sth East wind and will be blowing 15 - 20 knots all weekend with some rain according to current forecast on Seabreeze. If this forecast holds then anwhere on the bay side of the island will be relatively protected.

If you are camping along the shoreline with a boat, you will need to leave your boat a long way from shore, over 200 meters, if you want access to your boat at all times. The tide goes out a long way sth of the resort.

As for fishing try around the sandhills towards the sth end, any where along the shore at high tide, look for the gutters and partially submerged trees. Just sth of the wrecks is a deep hole worth trying, also try curtain artificial reef - nth of the wrecks.

Try trolling along the drops offs 6 - 20 metres of water and also the four beacons up near the resort end.

Plenty of places to fish over. Also keep in mind the green zones, there are some near the sth end of the island.

    regards Adam

heaps of spots to try. you may have a lot of it to yourself with the current weather forecast also which is a plus.

that's very helpful thanks mate. sounds like it should be ok then

I think the 6M boat should be pretty stable but we don't want to take any risks.

struggling to book any camp site on Moreton at the moment. I guess if we want to get off the boat and sleep on the beach that should be ok without a permit right? as long as we don't pitch a tent I think...

Anywhere from Cowan up to Bulwer is fine in a south easter, you probably wont even notice it and you don't have to anchor as far off the beach as you do further south.

As for sleeping on the beach (or dunes because you will probably get run over on the beach) so long as the rangers don't find you laying around in your swags you shouldn't have any dramas.

If you have to cross the bay when its over 20knts SE wait until the tide is half way out before heading back, it will give you a much better ride with out the tide and wind opposing each other. But in a 6m boat it should have no problems.

    Have a good weekend mate
