Unusual catch from the Pine

I was out early this morning chasing a few prawns in the Pine. They were a bit hard to find but I risked a throw over a known snag that usually holds a few and came up with this guy. I would call it a brown sweetlip Pseudopristipoma nigra, a fish more commonly caught in central Queensland according to Grant. I've caught the odd one fishing around the rocks in the surf at Fraser, but never seen one this far south. They are pretty ordinary eating so it was released. Had a quick fish with some fresh prawns under the freeway bridges on the way home. Got 10 bream, kept 6 of reasonable but not outstanding quality. At least I was able to avoid the worst of the downpour and got the boat out between the heavy showers.

If it tasted terrible then I would agree on blubber lip bream. have caught 2 and eaten 2.. and they both tasted terrible.

Not too uncommon in the Pine, I have nailed two similar sized ones up near the paper mill in the past 5 yrs.

Is it the same as this one - caught off the beach at 1770 last year - locals called it a slatey bream

No, the slatey is a uniform silvery grey and is a bit more slender than the brown, which is quite a solid chunky fish. I find the slatey a passable eating fish if bled and iced as soon as you catch it (and then given to the mother-in-law), but the brown is not worth the effort

I agreed with Freeeedom its not a slatey bream, but I carried with other calls up blubber-lipped bream. I remember I caught about 50cm at the Pin about 18 years ago...

We caught one in cobby cobby passage, the pin, a few years ago.

Blubberlip Bream/brown morwong/milf. Have also caught a few in the upper reaches of the Pine, as well as Noosa and Maroochy. Usually on prawn. I disagree regarding eating quality. Have eaten three now, and they tasted ok to me. No coral trout, but still palatable. They punch above their weight on the line, too.

I've caught a couple of the gold cost, I disagree as well. I don't remember them tasting too bad.
