    suspect Jack attack

Just bought my 4yo son a new rod and real today as he is right into it and starting to cast himself

new rod a 4.10 2-4kg ugly stick with a daiwa regal 2500 reel spooled with 10lb braid

took him fishing on monterey key lock looking for bream, juat had a 10lb fluro carbon leader light running sinker and a small long shank with prawns as bait.

good cast by dad 60-70meters into the lock.had the drag set to full 4kg. 5min later whack he's on much to his and dads delight.

what ever it was it was in deep water near no structure and pulled a good 50-70m in 10 sec running to the shoreline away from us.

leader ended up breaking and inch from the Albright. (amazing dads knot held!!)

now being in a lock there is heaps of bream and mullet and a few jacks. and i doubt either the bream or mullet would have had such a violent and fast bust of speed and I wouldnt have though that a jack would of gone for a bloody prawn in deep nowhere near structure in the middle of the day

any suggestions wo what this could have been?????

Not knowing where monterey key is, nor ever managed to catch a jack, I can't help with a possible ID. But I can tell your boy to take heart - I got hit by a freight-train also last night at 12 mile reef off Bundy. Nibbled like a tiny reefie, I got a bout 10 or so pump and winds on him and then he woke up.... and decided to head to NZ. I ended up having to lock the spool with my thumb just before it got to the 15m of backing. 16lb braid and it didn't even look like turning it.

Any suggesions to what this could be?
Yup - better than just about anything, that's what!

Not saying it wasn`t a jack but usually some big stingrays in those sort of places

Do you guys have GT's in the area?......Was it heading to structure?.....

A 5kg GT would strip a little reel like that fairly easy.....

OR a shoveley.....they can go hard if big enough...

GT pulled like one... yes we have GT closer to the seaway and on the offshore reefs, the fact it is a man made canal/lock with a lock gate was the interesting thing. I was thinking about a ray or something similar like a shovelnose. however the bottom is quite muddy as we are a fair way inland

whatever it was it was running for a couple of pontoons about 100m to the western shore of us

Bit hard to say mate.. jacks can hit it and run quite quick but will generally give a bit of a headshake also.. trevors just run and pretty fast but can tell after a bit with the bounce of your rod tip...much like tuna etc. some big eels in these types of places otherwise more than likely a jack....they will grab weird baits sometimes.
dont knock on deaths door... ring the doorbell and run... death hates that!!

Bull shark , tail wrap or tail hit would be why it busted up close to your knot. thats my guess but really could have been a number of gilled creatures. you`ll have to go back now and have another crack! Cheers Andrew

hard and fast with a few head shakes... went back yesterday.. did have any luck but these was a few bait fish jumping on the other side of the lock with a pretty decent bow wave.. so maybe thinking a trevor
