    Trolling outfits - recommendations sought

Almost finished fitting up the boat, and will be in a position to acquire some dedicated trolling outfits.

Target species will be YFT and Dollies, no interest in Marlin or Sailfish.

YFT seem to come in up the 50Kg model on South Coast NSW.

Seeking recommendations on Reel, Rod & Line

What brands and weight class would you use?

Depends on what line class you end up using will greatly dictate what gear you buy.
For 15kg you can't go past the tyrnos 30 for performance and value and will hold 600-700m of a good quality mono. For a cheaper option the TLD 25 are also a reasonable reel.
Rods really depends on where you come from. Wilson live fibre are reasonable rods for the dollars. The texalium 8-15kg and 15-24kg short stroked will give you plantly of leverage to pull stubborn up but a forgiving enough in the top to provide solid connection through the line.
So far as line Momoi and Ande are both good quality mono's as well as Shogun Ice blue. Try a fluro colour line like red or green so you can see the line easier.

Shimano tyrnos 30's or 50's, I would not worry about any 2-speed models these reel have top drags in them. I would not go with a graphite frame you start putting heavy drags on them, the graphite frames will flex and crack.

I use the tyrnos reels myself for the above fish and chasing billfish you can't go wrong .

I would grab a couple of TLD 25s or Tyrnos 30s filled with 15kg mono. Shorter rods such as stroker styles make easy work of fish fighting but are not as versatile as a longer 6'6" or 7'er

The Tyrnos is a much nicer reel to use than a TLD25 - better anti-reverse and much better handle knob which makes a big difference. They can make a lot more drag too.

It would seem that the Shimano Tyrnos 30 is the preferred choice, I called in to the local tackle shop and the Tyrnos was so much "smoother" than the TLD. We ended up with Tekota 700's spooled up with braid for our bottom bashing outfits for the same reason, and after almost 3 years, happy with the choice, this was reinforced after using a mate's Charter Special. The new outfits are to be dedicated trolling outfits, and we will keep the Tekotas for bottom bashing, jigging (a little slow) and the odd bit of surface action.

Thinking I might pair up with a 15Kg T-Curve revolution SU Troll rod and load it with a decent 15Kg mono line. Will have to shop around as we are looking to put 5 of these combos on board, looking like about $3600 at this time. Even over ten years this is still a reasonable outlay.

Any suggestions on where I might find these outfits at a reasonable dollar?

    Cheers

I would not buy 5 outfits the same. I would grab at least one much heavier outfit and a couple of lighter ones to open up a few more options

How do we make the big fish only take the 15Kg outfits?

What advantage is there in running lighter gear for trolling lures apart from leaving a perfectly good table fish at the mercy of the predators for a longer period while feeling good about giving it a "sporting chance". Don't bag out and catch and release when we have enough to eat, but finesse is light on.

Have a couple of lighter ones already, and not chasing Marlin or Sailfish. Tuna & Dollies are the targets, and we are sorta boring in that we only fish out of Bermagui, and they don't see a lot of barrels down there. We possibly don't want to catch anything that requires a 50 size reel, I know I would run out of puff before the fish.

To run lighter, our Tekota outfits seem do fine, we just run a decent length of mono leader off the braid, have had a ball with Salmon, Stripey Tuna, Bonito and even some small Albacore on one occasion.

The plan is to be able to run a pattern of six lures. We already have a large'ish Okuma star drag reel on a cheap rollered 24Kg game rod that I scored a 1.8m Hammerhead on, so these will be used for dragging skirts and lures for YFT. The only other use these rods will get is for cubing.

Tried cubing with braid the other day and found that it floated the cube out of the trail, even with a swivel and clip, visibility was better than 20 seconds on a cube, and the cube was rising out of the trail. Having rods set up with mono seems necessary, as the braid is required due to the depths we normally fish chasing Snappers (40 - 110m).

Have a Saragosa 18000 on a T-Curve for poppers and surface lures, and depending on the day, it gets used trolling as well. Made short work of an 85cm Kingie and managed to beat the seals with ease. Not real sporting but we were after a feed.

You probably want to go up a line class for the rods. Use a 15-24 or 24 kg rod for 15 kg tackle. Almost all rod manufacturers over-rate their rods and you end up fishing them at full load all the time. By going up a class, you can stick it to a fish much harder. Personal preference anyway.

Cant's go pass the Tyrnos. We run 2 of each, 12's with 8kg, 16's with 15kg and 20's with 24kg so you can target a wider range. Wellsys Tackle online is great for options and prices.
