Logging on with VMR or Coastguard

I go out from multiple departure points and expect that to continue. I was thinking of joining Vicky Point and logging on to whoever is closest.

If I do that can I register my details with all of them to make the logging better for all concerned?

Yes you can.

The local radio operator SHOULD ask you for the following:

1. departure point
2. going to (and don't just say "to the island" or "in the bay" - plan a lat / long or geographical location name. narrow it down for search & rescue requirements
3. vessel name and / or rego number, vessel type & colour
4. ETA or ETR - ETA, estimated time of arrival to your destination point or ETR, estimated time of return back to departure point.
AND please don't say "some time this afternoon" or "back tomorrow night" - GIVE an agreed time in 24hour time eg 17:00
By providing a time, you now have an agreement between the MRG and yourself as to when the MRG starts to get worried about you being overdue.
Any changes to the time, contact MRG and update - it's FREE
5. Mobile phone if one on-board (secondary contact point)
6. POB - persons on board eg. 2 males adults, 2 female, 1 boy, 1 girl. in short 6 POB.

depending on which state you are in, the MRG may ask you how much fuel onboard.

Log on at VMR southport seaway if going out further than 18s .Am a member and get good service. Dont bother if only going to baitreef and in close because too lazy and sometimes a waiting queque to log on. You get complacent . Will start all the time again now. Good wake up call. Only wish they would all amalgamate or reciprocate services . Cant afford to join them all.

I was under the impression that they do reciprocate their services.

The exact membership details are not shared between the Groups, if you join Southport, Then they have all your details and thats it, None of the exact information is passed over. If in the event that your vessel is over due the Water Police are Notified and then they can get all of your information needed.

Thanks Lee. So do they let you join one but supply your details to the others individually on paper so you can log on but if they need to search they have more details available? Eg don't need to provide boat type colour etc but they do have it if a search is needed?

The more info you cna provide during a Log On the better should a Search Occur,

However lets say you are 2 hours overdue and we cannot contact you on VHF or your mobile phone number you supplied, The Marine Rescue Group will contact The Water Police. They will then get your personal details, Call you at home, Whatever they can to try and find you, Should they ring home and your Wife says, Nope he is not home, the Water Police will then Activate the Marine Rescue Group to conduct a search, they will provide more in depth details on your boat, Trailer Rego, Car rego ETC ETC. Now if you told us that you were going to be at Depp tempest, We will head to that Location, Now remember how big a location some common reef locations are. From there we may find you anchored up still fishing and forgotten to tell us you were going to stay longer, From there thats it in regards to us. Now if we dont find you, everything changes, it could mean there is a Full Aerial and at sea search for you, until we find you or your boat it generally doesnt stop. It could go on for days if we dont find you.

What this basically means that you need to give us as much Information as possible when you log on and what you do during the day. How many times have you logged on saying you are fishing in one place and then move during the day 20kms away to another reef. If you dont tell US we never now, When it comes to life and death a little more information would be VERY handy.

Lee I sure understand what you are saying and will fully comply with that.

However if I was to forget to log off... (Won't happen I hope) then if the org knows my rego and trailer rego they can check the carpark and they will have mobile nums etc. That would short circuit the big search effort and keep your valuable resources from being wasted.

So I would be happy to supply all that info to all the potential orgs I may log on with, but I can't afford to join them all.

Also its not practical to supply that info over the radio. It is sounding as though it isn't possible to give your details to all the VMRs unless you join each. Or perhaps I am wrong.

You could simply type out the relevant information that the VMR / Coast Guard require ( Inc car rego etc ) and hand it in to the VMR office prior to your departure, while ya deckie readies the boat for launching. Maybe even print off a few copies and have them stored in the boat for future trips, adding destination, POB and ETR each time.

Then log out via radio, upon your return.

But yes WalrusLike. You cant join them all. But your membership at one place does not entitle you to free rescue at another site as we found out at Mooloolabah when in trouble and were members at Southport. HAD TO PAY UP BIG TIME. Pity they cant work something out.

Be interested to know the cost and what help you needed, might spur me on to join ( was always a member of mooloolaba when lived up that way but Brisbane is confusing with the multiple options available)

We had electrical failure and were a long way out at Caloundra Wides. In a 7.2 Razorline and had to be towed back in and strapped to the side coming in through the bar. A bit embarrasing too but glad they were there to help. My mate was $400 lighter. But now a member.

I am sure if you walked up to the Radio room they would be happy to take your details, the easier it is for us the better.

However If you do forget to Log off and we cannot contact you, We notify the Water Police who do have your Trailer Rego, Car rego ETC ETC, they can then pass on that info to us to have a look for your car/trailer. From there it would dictate what would happen.
