You guys?? For your information I am not employed or have any financial interest in PEtackle....

And sorry Wags I wasn't aware you knew everything about the petackle business and/or Barry's operation....

You are very quick to knock/question anything that myself and Sean post, keep at it and we will keep catching good fish Thanks again for your extremely useful and informative post, I am sure the thread starter will thank you for it

Anyways back on topic... Why wouldn't you just use the trusty paternoster rig? been slaying pearlies for years.... adjust the height of the hooks according to the distance the fish are off the bottom on the sounder.

Livies, mullet and pillies are all great baits for pearlies if you go down the traditional route, could use bait on one hook and a plastic on the other if fishing paternoster....

Big Pearlies usually jump all over liveies, just fish them on patanoster rigs as Spot82 mentioned..

i have never worked out why adding a pillie to a buck tail jig would work better than than just using a pillie or a pillie with a glow bead in deep water.

Neither have I, if I knew what fish thought it would make fishing a lot easier

Anyone who has fly fished can answer that question, It adds movement and Fish are attracted to the movement !! pretty basic really

Yeh sort of but I have never seen a fly fisherman stick a mayfly or slab of pillie on a fly. I also haven't had any problems catching pearlies without buck tail jig either.

Do they add scent to the fly though?? have you ever fished with non scented soft plastics?

Next time I go fishing for snapper or pearlies I will just dip the jigs in gulp scent rather than adding a small bit of bait, I am sure the results would be the same... After all fish have a sense of smell and taste I am assuming!

Great fun catching pearlies on soft plastics on light gear.
Tried gulps and snapbacks for good success with pink and white being best colours.
Found the plastics catch the better fish tested on a paternoster rig with one bait and a plastic, the plastic tends to get the better fish probably 3 to 1.
Live bait will always get the cracker pearlies hands down though.
Big snapper are always a welcome bycatch when targeting pearlies on SP's.

I reckon the results would be better as you wouldn't stuff the action of the jig and that is my main point. Why use a lure like a standard hook Which is what putting a pillie is doing ? Better of using a scented plastic that has both action and scent. I will still go for a pillie over either though but no doubt they all work.

Been fishing off SEQ before Adam was born . In a school situation the bigger pearlies always swim on the top of the school so it pays to wind up an extra meter or so for better quality. Pearlies will nail anything that is silver or white (glow helps attract them). I have caught them on my glow jigheads without any bait or krystal flash but adding a tail (krystal flash or flesh) helps the jig to swim better in the water and replicates a live bait.

    Cheers
