Dead bait rigs

Heya All,

Have had a bit of a search for dead bait rigs with few results, so maybe some people could share their knowledge and help us out. I mainly troll live gar, tuna, tailor and mackeral + pillies wit a chin guard. But can't rig em once dead. I watched a dvd called 'the spanish mackeral' think it was made by a pro up north somewhere maybe not? Was an unreel dvd but. Boy where his baits swimming sweet! But he did not explain how to do this. Some picture/ photos would be great too.. Any advice would be appriciated or if there is already a indepth thread point me in the right direction. Would be a good reference point for others at my level. Cheers in advance Cal

I'm planning to try the same sort of rig soon, with one and two ounce jigheads (7/0 - 9/0 hooks).

I have a good chin guard set up already. I was thinking more larger tuna baits and basically just hook rigs? Perhaps there is a book someone can reccomend? Cheers for all the help so far.

Keep searching you tube for a host of ideas on how to rig baits with just hooks and no lead. Search marlin bait rigging, gar rigging or ballyhoo rigging. Find the common denominator in these rigs and have a crack yourself. There are countless ways to rig a bait fish weightless ( just the hooks) to have it swim. I purposely left out the how to with 'no lead' and hoped that keen viewers would find and learn more by doing exactly what you are doing on here and on you tube. You'll find a host of info that will broaden your bait rigging knowledge which will then help you catch more fish. Bait rigging alone could easily be another 45 minute DVD.
If you watch the 'rigged dead troll bait' section on the Spanish Mackerel DVD again and listen to the words I chose- these should help you understand what makes a rigged dead bait swim. Balance, symmetry, water pressure, (just like a lure swimming) soft and supple dead baits. It's not much different to using a rig with lead attached. Have a think and do more you tube snooping. You'll find plenty.
