    Whitsunday islands fishing

    Gday guys,
This is my first time on this site and i was wondering if i could get some info on fishing in the whitsundays. I went there in september/october '09, but didnt take any gear, but had a ball!
The wife and i are retunring this year, same time. I was wondering if i could get some info on land based/tinny hire fishing? What gear etc.
    Many thanks, GT

If you are chasing GT, you will need some big gear. Look for ares of current and water standing up. poppers are best. Most coral fringing islands hold fish stop in and have a chat with Lindsay Dobe in Prossie or the tackle shop in Airlie - tp blokes will put you onto some spots

i went to weipa last year on the gts and have the dogfights etc but as we are flying to cairns then to the islands i will be landbased mostly, when we where up there last i sussed out the hire boats but they seem to limit the area you can go which is fair enough.do you think there is some fun to be had off the rockwalls etc?this trip is not to serious as next year the wife and i are towing the boat up from down south to spend 4/6weeks around the islands /airlie . thanks regards gt

Hi GT, the wife and i take the boat up to airlie each year on holidays (except for last year as the first child came along). We have stayed at Flametree - cheap but was very noisy as it is right beside a small airport & trucks up and down the road. Stayed at airle cove but can be tight with a boat over 5 metres. last place we stayed at was Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday and we had a blast - great amenities and camp sites were a great size. Have just upgraded the boat and have already booked to go up there this october! Oh and with the secure parking at shute harbour. We got caught out - came back in after 7pm one night and everything was locked up. Sign says call..... for after hours but security were useless and said owners hadn't given them a new key and the owners just don't answer their phone. We ended up having to sleep on the bottom of our tinny for the night - not comfortable!! This was 2 years ago so hopefully things have changed but we won't be chancing it again.

thanks tc,i will check out that park you mentioned its only for a few nights at the start and finish.we are going to base ourselves from one of the islands most of the time so the 7pm close on the long term parking shouldnt be to much of a problem thanks for the heads up regards gt
