    Importing GPS from the USA

Apologies if it's been covered before, but is their any issue with the function of a GPS purchased in the USA but operated in Australia? ie. If I buy a cheap GPS/sounder combo from the US will it work fine here? Is there anything I need to look out for?

yes, look up any posts with "geofencing" and a lot of US units only have feet and miles per hour, which to some is a real pain.

    Hi Paddles,

The Lowrance products are definately geofenced. Raymarine is not and neither are Furuno or Garmin units. (At least in January when I was last there).

The issue is lead time and specific model #'s. You need to order one either without maps or pre loaded with the South Pacific maps rather than the US maps they come pre loaded with as standard. Once you do the maths and / or buy the local maps it may not be as attractive as first thought.

Any of the quality retail stores who do mail order as well should be able to guide you.

    Happy hunting, Steve
