Most likely a Mary River Cod, I caught a 25 pounder there in a Bass comp last year . Two others caught the same weekend.

If it looked like either of these it was a Mary River Cod, the SWFSA have released about 40,000 of them at Somerset. The anglers are Matt Johnson and Baydon Sparrow.

    G'Day Crabby,

What type of pots were you using?

I would think the rat was a water rat, they love eating small fish, cray & shrimps actively hunting them in the shallows. Can pick them easy by the white tip of the tail. They're a native animal & should be released if you happen to get one as by-catch. They normally don't get into opera house traps that well, I've only seen one caught in a trap before. I managed to video one from a bridge one day chasing rainbowfish.

There's no Murray Cod been stocked into Somerset. Would most certainly be a Mary River Cod which we stock most years into Somerset Dam, Wivenhoe Dam & the Brisbane & Stanley Rivers. While you can take one legal size one from the lakes they are totally protected in the rivers upstream & downstream of the dams. They should be released anyway, as their numbers are still quite low & we're hoping to establish them as a self sustaining (breeding) population.
