Thread: Trawling for whiting in Moreton Bay

Re: Trawling for whiting in Moreton Bay

we dont work in packs,we congregate where the prawns congregate,if there is no prawns in a spot its no good trawling there just to be away from everyone else.comparing trawling to land based activities doesnt work either.from the land you can only take introduced feral species, not natives so if it were the same as on the land you would be keeping tilapia or carp only.if the predatory fish are eating the trash thrown over from the trawlers then thats more mackeral or tuna for everyone to catch,or more dolphins for everyone to cudle at tangalooma, one trawler is also equivelant to a hell of a lot of tinnies because it is feeding many many more mouths,so you will naturally get more bycatch.anyway thats enough from me on this one, everyone is set on their opinion and round and round it goes.

I appreciate everybody's contributions and everyone is entitled to opinions but I did not start this thread to debate the evils or otherwise of trawling, although there has been some good debate on the issue. I would be happy to debate that issue on a separate thread.

I started it to get clarification regarding a simple single issue - the current proposal to allow trawlers to take whiting.

So far we have heard about emails, correspondence and meetings; all bar one of which are unknown as are any outcomes or agreements.

The response from the Recreational Fishing Development Officer in Qld Fisheries was straight out of the bureaucrats handbook and sounded more like something out of the Jo era (Feeding the chooks I think they called it) "Don't you worry about that!"

Still no proof of any public consultation on the issue with the average angling public.

No response from Sunfish who were supposedly contacted. Do we assume from this that they are supportive? Do Sunfish have a policy of not participating in forums like this to keep the average fisher informed?

The only response was from LuckyPhill on behalf of Ecofishers. Appreciated.

I asked some questions previously which I thought were relevant. Refer my post on the 11th of April at 11.44am.

Can anyone help us out with answers to some or all of these questions?
Or do we just give up and let the system treat us like mushrooms and beat us again?

Sorry about the rant, Getting old and cranky.
I too want to know more and find it very frustrating and secretive as to what is going on with the whiting issue and others.

I am trying to become more involved with internal fishing affairs but it seems a bit closed shop and hard to get inside information.

    I'll keep trying though.
