Bribie to Tangas Life jackets, smooth waters boat is over 7.8m at what age do the young ones have to where the jacket, the whole time. Talking young as in 0ne at 15months and 0ne at 19months and 0ne at 3 years. Obviously have the jackets for them but do they have to wear the whole time.

On our boat we make all little ones including the dogs wear lifejackets at all times regardless of the rules. If something happened it buys them some more time in the water. I would hate to have to choose which one to hold if their were an accident and they end up in the water.

Sorry about the huge cut and paste. this was taken off a NSW maritime site, but I think the rules are the same Australia wide. You would not risk an infant of this age, has no chance if they suddenly find themselves in the water without a floatation device. Drowning would be almost instant.

In QLD it is pretty much the same as NSW but the use the slogan under 12 under way. and the water you are crossing is partially smooth waters to open waters depending how far north you cross the mouth of the bay. If you have a beacon to beacon it is all in the front pages of it including all the other safty gear that you will need onboard.

I would think they shoudl wear a lifejacket until you are comfortable they can swim/survive themselves. It would not take much to be knocked out when going over board, even an adult will not survive, I would be making sure my young passengers all wear lifejackets. Dont think you would forgive yourself if something happened.

Compulsory wearing of life jackets

It is compulsory to wear a life jacket:

• when crossing a coastal bar in an open boat that is less than 4.8 m in length
• if you are under the age of 12 in an open boat that is less than 4.8 m in length, while it is under way.

Definitions

Under 12 – from 12 months and up to, but not including, 12 years of age. It is not recommended that babies under 12 months travel on boats unless necessary. When they do, they must be held securely by a parent or other responsible adult.
Open vessel – a boat that does not have a permanent rigid deckhouse, cabin or other enclosed space suitable for a person to occupy.

Underway – a boat not at anchor, made fast to the shore or aground. A boat does not have to be moving to be underway.

Coastal bar – a shallow area where sand is deposited across a river mouth, lake, estuary or harbour entrance.

Designated coastal bars – Currumbin Bar, Tallebudgera Bar, Jumpinpin Bar, South Passage Bar, Caloundra Bar, Maroochy Bar, Noosa Bar and Wide Bay Bar.

Rules or not, put a jacket on them mate!
I put one on my 12yo nephew before heading out. It's one less thing to worry about.
If you've got 'em, wear 'em because they can't save you if they're not on!

yep, we're the same on our boat, our kid wears a lifejacket at all times under way regardless of the rules. once we're stopped however i let her take it off, even if we are anchored a little off the beach. but if we jump in the inflateable it's back on again.

the quick answer is No. your boat is over 4.8 meters

But it's up to you. My kids usually take a nap on the boat most of the time so it's uncomfortable to do so.
