Thread: Black Fillet Cod

    Black Fillet Cod

Caught this Cod a few weeks ago, caught 3 around the same size on the one spot but this one's fillets were a bit strange in colour

Looked possibly like a very fine black worm through all of the flesh, never seen anything like it before!!

Can any one shed any light on it? Kept a fillet if there is anyone who does research into this sort of thing.

That doesn't look at all good mate, looks rotten nearly, what was the flesh like i.e firmness etc?

Flesh was still very firm, the black through the fillet was very fine (small fine lines), but combined through the flesh it made the fillet look black! Was in the 10-12kg range, so not a small fish either! Shame to see it go to waste!

The other one tasted beautiful, so much so that a ausfish member by the name of Perko thought i had given him a feed of red emperor!

It must been the way I cooked it. It sure was good. But I don't like the look of that black flesh though. Have you got any of the reds that go very tough when cooked yet?

You see a fair few brown maori cods with a black ink sack thing or tumour or whatever in them but have never seen anything like that. To got with Perko's rubbery red emperor from up there, the Capricorn/Bunker Group seems to throw up a few oddities!

I have seen the black sack thing in a couple of trout, usually up near the back of the head, I have just cut it out and washed the fillets straight away, seem to taste normal.

I have had one tough red emperor and sean has got one as well, also the blue moari cod i got was tough as boot leather once cooked

Nothing like mother nature throwing oddities into the mix!

the fish may have eaten squid hence the black color.

Through the whole fish though? The fish was 80-90cm long, that is a lot of squid ink to go through its system!
