    Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

    Hi Guys,
Bought a 4000 with a T curve snapper rod for the wife,
Except for a small Penn, most of my reels are overheads,

I'm "new" to the spool adjustment washers?

Spooled the reel up as standard, appears to be casting OK but there is a steep angle on the braid, (low at the rear and high at the front)

Is this a normal? Guess I am used to having it flat?

    Regards,
    Gary

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

    Hi Gary,
Most spin reels these days have spool adjustment washers placed directly under the spool on the shaft. The spool sits on these as the rotor arm spins around the spool. If you have the box the reel came in it will have instruction on this as to whether you add or remove washers to flatten out the line lay dependant upon if the line is more to the front or rear of the spool. There should also be a small amount of these washers supplied with the reel and they should be in the box also.
To fix your problem you will have to remove the line from the spool and then remove the spool from the shaft by undoing the drag knob all the way. If i have it right add one or two washers from the box onto the shaft and seat them so they sit flat on top of the existing washers. Replace the spool and place about 100meteres of line back on to check if the line is laying flat. If it is to your satisfaction just complete spooling the reel if not make further adjustments.

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

Many tks for your detailed response,
Yes, did have instructions and washers in the box but doesn't say which is the more common option and that I had to remove the line to reset

I guess the question is, what is the best option?
Is the line less tangle if flat? or, the other way around?

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

Gary that is a good question. Personally i like the line fairly flat. They say a forward tapper on the line increases casting distance but i am unsure about this. Laying the line flat gives me more capacity on the reel and that is more important to me than casting a few extra metres.

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

    Many thanks Dick,
    That makes sense,
May just have to do some experimentation, the wife is very happy with the set-up ATM so might just leave it for a while,

The reel does perform great, just the line on the spool looks unusual,

I'm thinking of getting a 2500 and a lighter outfit for myself and will do some experiments, wife is a "if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it" person, just looks wrong to me

Will take a photo and post it today, it will give an idea of the lay of the line

    Regards,
    Gary

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

Looking at the picture the line lay is slightly forward but not to exaggerated. Best keep the wife happy and not touch it if it is not broke. If you decide to flatten the line lay i would only add one more washer to fix the problem.

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

    Tks Dick,
You have been a great help, at least I know to adjust it now,
Pity Shimano didn't put a warning on the box and explained the different characteristics, even some images demonstrating what happens with different washers and their preferred option, that would save a lot of messing around,

In saying that, I guess old guys like me should keep up to date with the new gear

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

Do not worry about being an old guy and not keeping pace with all this guff. I can assure you that you are not the only old guy that struggles with some of the new technologies myself included.

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

    Hi Dick,
I had a reply from Shimano here in Australia, (Dunphy sports fishing imports),

    Their reply was the following,
    "
The reel in question has a propulsion spool lip, due to its design and characteristics its optimum performance is obtained with a flat line lay as opposed to top heavy with other brands of reels.

Reason being with the line lay system as you cast the flat line lay transmit less resistance and more uniform loops coming of the spool creating less tangles and improved casting distance."

I gather they are recommending a flat line lay in the first place? If that is the case, I would have thought Shimano would have the reel set up to lay flat prior to shipment?

    Bit confusing!
    Regards,
    Gary

Re: Question for Shimano Ci4 Owners,

Yeah i guess you would think a company the size of Shimarno would have it right by now. Reading their spiel i think they are surgessting flat is best for the reel so i would spool the line back off again and add 1 washer then re-spool a little to see that it is laying flat; if so continue with it if it is still laying forward a little just add a second washer and start again.

    Tks Dick,

Now I have a handle on this, will definitely sort the problem out,
Might take the boat for a run again on Friday and put one washer on and see what happens,

Will give me a chance to have a play with the wife's rod

Will be doing a lot of drifting so will run the line out with a big bomb and swivel and see what happens

The tension of the big bomb should get it right
    Regards,
    Gary
