    Merc water pump

I own a 40 hp four stroke Merc 99 model which has the Yamaha 3 cylinder power head. Today i tried to change the impeller to no avail, I have been told that the shift linkage has to disconnected at the power head end ,but I am buggered to see were. I have a manual in cd form but it does not show how to achieve disconnecting the gear shift to allow the prop and gear box removal. Has any one had experience with changing the impeller in these motors. It also doesn't help having sausage sized fingers either.

I've got a 2000 mdl Merc Mariner and the gearshift link is towards the bottom of the shifter, nowhere near the powerhead. You should be able to follow the gear shift shaft down and you'll find it. A simple operation once you know where to look I guess. The rest of the impeller replacement should be straight forward also.

I'll post up a pic tomorrow if you still need one.

there is a couple of methods used to connect the shift shaft, some had a nut and bolt or clip setup, right in the power head area, some had a nut and bolt that can be accessed when the leg has been dropped a bit, and others had a spline setup, where the shaft just slides off the gear box end, buy a genuine manual for your motor, it will be the best money you ever spent, the Cd's and cheap copies are only just OK, they do not deal with specifics (as you found out)
