    Moreton bay ideas.

    Gday fellas,

I own a 4m tinny powered by a brand new 30hp suszuki.. i fish the pine and brissy river quite consistently but every time i try my hand outside in moreton bay it seems a bit dangerous ( both days where quite windy days however ) i was wondering if it was just the average days that made the trip uncomfortbale or is my boat a bit small.. i do a lot of fishing around fraser and have a lot of spot x up there for nice reefies.. and am keen to do a bit of adventuring out in the bay and find some closer to home..
    cheers

a 4mtr tinny will be ok on a day of 10-15.u should be able to get to mud green islands.best bet is to get out early and head in befor it gets to the 15knt mark as it will be uncomfortable...i have a 3.9mtr boat as well as my bigger boat which i use for crabbing ...anymore than 15knts i take the bigger boat to get my pots
    cheers rosco

Haha yes reminds me of the first day I took my 4.4mtr half cab out in the bay to see what she could do, got 3/4 of the way to moreton before the backside could take no more punishment, could not sit properly for 2 days after that upgraded the seating since!

That was in 15knt winds so it's definately the limit for the size, but thats also considering that was in a fibreglass boat so more comfortable (if you can call it that). The boat would have made it all the way to Moreton, was just more painful than dangerous.

Basically you just have to go to the spots that the weather will allow on the day really with a boat that size

Make it a 5 to 10 knot day. With .7 or lower wave hight. My boat a little bigger and will go up to 25 knots but max wave hight is 1 meter. Some days an 8 foot tinny is capable. Remember the bay can turn nasty in minutes.

i used to have a 4.1 allycraft rhino with a 40 honda on it and i used to head out to the shipping channel chasing macs all the time, even went out to hutchys in it one time and also to western rocks. like the above posts 10-15 is ok but only if the wind is blowing a S/E anything else and i would not go or would if it was blowing 5-10......i used to head out real early and most times it would get better as the day went on....... had it glass out like a mill pond one day like nothing i have ever seen, not even a ripple and was a nice feeling floating across to moreton in a tiller doing 60 kmh

I fish Harry's in a 4.2. It's about the only place i fish in the bay (don't have any better producing spots). 10 knot forecast, and I'm out there. That said, been some very long and very slow rides back to Manly when the wind has picked up to 15kts.

            Cheers!

If the forecast is for .7m seas or below you can usually get out to Mud and beyond with a light south-westerly around dawn. This will often drop off mid-morning to glass-out conditions. Most days the afternoon sea breeze is a north-easterly of around 10-15 knots. When this starts to come in I'll usually head for home and even if it chops up a bit you are riding across a following sea so it's quite comfortable if you take it easy. I'll never head out across the bay if the forecast is above 15 knots or if there is any West in the main forecast (not counting the morning land breeze) - bashing your way back across the bay through a westerly chop is too hard on the joints these days
              Cheers Freeeedom

best information i can suggest is to look at the wind charts dont just take into account that the forecast issues is for a 5 - 10 knot day. look at the wind charts and confirm for your own peice of mind that the suggested 5 - 10 knot day is for moreton bay not for brisbane itself. its amazing how 10 klms up the coast it can be glassed out yet down in moreton bay there can be a 15 knot chop on the bay.

Dont forget guys if youve got wind against tide and particularly if its around the full or new moon with the big tides it can be dangerous in a boat of that size. Cheers MM
I am a fisherman,it's not something I merely do,it is who I am! Fishing is not simply my escape,it is where I am supposed to be,it is not a place that I go, But a life long journey I am taking, it is a passage that was shown to me and that I will continue to show to others. When you understand all of this, you will then know me and we will fish together.

Yes it make a big difference. Make sure that you take this into account.
15kn with the tide is a lot different from 15kn against.
