Tailor south of Black Rock

I went south of the border Friday arvo 18/03/11 .Tried just south of black rock. I had two casts and broke my 14ft 6 rod, so thinking it was all over headed back to the vehicle. I had a portable rod I always carry that pulls out to 10 feet so I thought I'd give it a try. I had to travel further down the beach to find a suitable gutter so as to cast to the tailor with a 10 foot rod. I found one but was casting about a meter short of the white water. but managed to catch 7 choppers , still went home happy that I got a feed.

Bummer with the rod Spindles. I have never seen one break there. At least you got a feed and now a reason to pick up a flash new rod

Horse,The rod in the photo is the rod I caught the tailor with, if you look under the tail of the top fish you can see all of the rod runners together. The rod pulls out to 10 ft.Spindles

Bondy , Good luck with the fishing, I checked my rods and found I still had a14 ft fiberglass rod. ( gold coaster) Which is a rod very simular to the sea coaster but it is fiberglass. so I will still be fishing. Spindles

Thanks I done a check with Tackle warehouse on old cleveland Road, they have 13ft 8" rod sea coaster $119.00.

2 piece and 1 piece all same price.

BCF local (Loganholme) store dont stock them

Bondy99. I dont use a two peice rod because you lose some of the flexability but I
would use it if I had nothing else or storage prblems while traveling.Spindles

Spindles, modern rods in 2 (or more) piece design are just as good if not better than the one-piece jobs. Ferrule technology has advanced considerably.
I use a rod I made up on a 3-piece Braidbuster blank (12 foot, 7 wrap) for general surf duty in preference to my single piece Live Fibres.
The modern Japanese rods are multi-piece and pretty darn light and powerful.
So IMHO don't necesarily discount a multi-piece rod from your choices.

I'm after a good surf rod to catch tailor, salmon and dart. Wont be using Alvey, just an egg beater type.

I have to use 2 piece.

I purchased "Tailor Taker" (14ft I think) it's two piece but heavy to cast and somewhat not balanced. I have been fishing from the sand pumping jetty a few times with it, never had much success with that rod.

I have another rod, also two piece, a bit lighter, either 12'6" or 13' and have caught tailor on it but after a few casts the line stretches too much and fish drop off.

I have replaced the reels old line with new line 30ib and the bugger still breaks...will be heading to the surf at Wooyung to see if this one will do the job.

However, I'm still looking for a better surf rod but cant afford to shell out high dollars. Any recommendations?

Bondy99, I can't see anything could be wromg with the tailor taker 13.6 ft rod. but if you are breaking a 30lb line something must be wrong, may be a faulty runner could be causing it.check your runners to see if there are any cracks or grooves in them to damage the line because it is very hard to break a 30 lb line while using a rod.nothing wrong with the rod you have got.Spindles

Yeah, I'm going to double check the rod, I was using the rod from the sand pumping jetty as opposed from a beach, maybe the extra strain with a good fish might be stretching the line.

Hey spindles, The Butterworth "Gold Coaster" is a legendary beach rod when coupled with a suitable sized Alvey, nothing wrong with being a bit old fashioned thats for sure, keep up the good work mate !!
