    Stanage bound

I'm off for a week at Stanage Bay during the first week of May. I'm looking forward to sampling the estuary and close offshore fishing options. Oh and I will be taking a few crab pots to check out the local crustacian population
I have never been up that way before so if anyone has any info It would be greatly appreciated.
Big tides and bad road in are about the only things I know about the joint so far
    Cheers

If it works out it could be a wild place for a M&G with most Queenslanders within a days drive or so

Find the bait in the creeks and you will find the fish. Been fishing anually there for over 15 years & have found the eastern side of quail island the best, many barra over a meter. Best to get in before the pro netters, probably to late now.

Horse try to get get there for the smaller tides because she absolutly rips with current out on the reefs up there. When we were there we had a really hard time with the fishing on the reef and the locals say that if you get a south westerly up there dont even bother going out and that is what we had the whole time up there.

I have been told that it can be red hot up there or totally crap fuel price in there wasn't to bad and probably not worth your while towing it up, it wasn't much dearer especially if your dividing it up between a few of you, but thats all i would get from there as the lady that works there was well you will find out.

Bait from the tackle shop was pretty good, and reasonably priced.

They say you need to do about twenty k's to get onto the crabs up there didn't crab ourselves but thats what tony the pro crabber told us, head left up the river and keep going and probably put bricks in your pots or shove them right up the feeder creeks because they will motor.

The reef up there is nothing like you have ever seen before, and the fish on the sounder will blow your mind and you wont no where to fish first, we had the best shows ever but the fish didn't want to play we did get a few fish dont get me wrong but we did expect a whole lot more, for the week there we only got about 30 fish between the four of us.

The scenary up there is awesome with all the island's really nice and a must see is the a frame hut at middle percy so my brother tells me, didn't end up there myself. Hope you get onto them mate i think we where just very unlucky with our timing and i might get up there again one day.

The road in can be really bad we got it just after it had been grated and took us about 2 hrs taking it real easy. If you head in at dawn or dusk watch out for the roos they are every where.

    cheers pete...

    Re: Stanage bound

G,day Horse, I will be up there from the 27th may. ( weather permitting) If you end up putting your trip back further to around that time give us a shout. I have fished there before and can tell you that the tides will blow your mind if your there at the wrong time. The fish feed on the neap tides and the run isn't as bad. If the wind is blowin 20 to 30 up the sound against the tide the waves will stand up dramatically so be careful if coming back from crabbing or fishing from long Is way. Hope the weather holds for you, it is an awesome place to fish and crab.

    cheers Paul

What about the ramp/s. Are they manageable or does it rip past at certain times of the tide. Can you get stuck and have to wait for more water?

Sounds like a great trip Horse.

Ratman the ramp is managable but it is half tide up before you can get your boat back on may be a little less for a smaller boat ect tinnie and the like.
