    Whats happening to my boat?

    Hey all,

I have noticed the discolouration on my boat recently, when i bought it there was no issues at all, now i have this maroon colour on the rubber. When i leave it in the shed for a few weeks it will go very very dark and stretch the length of the boat, but a few days out in the water and it starts to fade?!

Here are some pics where it has started to fade:

Any ideas or help at all as it makes the boat look crap!

    Cheers

Hi, could be algae / mould of some sort. The humid conditions that we have had lately will keep it growing whilst in the shed. UV will kill it. I would try bleach to get rid of it. Try one of the Gel bleaches like toilet cleaner, that will stick to the surface for longer (need about 5-8 minutes) and then wash.

That wont damage the rubber? It definently doesnt like being in the sun whatever it is coz over a weekend of fishing it will almost completely fade but then 5-6wks later it will be a really deep red all the way round the boat

Definatley sounds like a mould of some sort them. Dying in UV light. It shouldn't damage the rubber at all. If concerned though, try on an inconscipuous spot first just to make sure.

Quite a few years ago i had the same problem. turned out to be the polish i was using & i wasn't being careful enough in the application.

Have you polished your boat recently?

I have never polished the boat, i only noticed that it started after a trip to Coffin Bay. I originally thought it might just be dirt from the iron ore mines but i cant wash it off!

I use acetone to remove marks on the side rubbers on my hull...the only thing that will work that I know of. Been using this method for years, no issues. Can't explain a sudden discolouration like that though.

    G'day,

Wash the boat with a strong chlorine bleach. Do it outside and wear protective gear. When you have finished use lots of water to flush it clean.

Come back to us after three days and tell us the result. If it is a fungus or algae you will kill it but it also means the hull has to be resealed.

I left the victory at a dealer while I was on hols once while they did a little job. They stored it in the yard and there were a lot of road works outside. Same look.
Ditto for the acetone . Came up in a flash. still fine.

Hit it with a product called Gumption.Rub it over with a rag to polish off and rinse with water. It will polish the rubbing strip to new and takes little effort.Jim
