Thread: What I hate about 4 strokes

Re: What I hate about 4 strokes

From memory from other posts Skutso has a Etec. I reckon an ETEC 150 would fly compared to a 4 stroke 115...similar weight too. But if it were me I wouldnt be finding that to be a revelation. Having said that going back many years I had a ride in a boat with a 115 Honda that did not have the throttle response of my carb 115 V4 Yammy down low with very similar boat weights - but I reckon that turbine smoothness made up for the driving experience and hey...if you want more herbs and the turbine experience in 4 stroke go up a size. I bet since then throttle response and pick up has been improved on the 4's but while I have been in 4 stroke powered boats since, none of similar weight and engine size etc.

That's what got me to ! Comparing a 115 to a 150 for performance???? What the???I'm sure if he had only gone from a 115 yami to a 140 suki four there also would have been a huge diferance!
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!

And as for comparing a 155 to a 150 for HP well im not suprised tthe 150 gave the boat a better kick in the pants!

yes it is a 150 etec and yes i do get as good as fuel economy for the same speed its a light hull for a 150 and it doesnt work hard .

the secret to good fuel economy with a 2 stroke is have max power for the hull and run prop as high as you can without cavatating useing the tabs to do the work pushing the nose into the sea

i think one of the biggest problems betweem the 2 and 4 / debate is most 4/ owners are comparing against the old 2/ not the di 2/.
the new di 2/ uses fuel pretty much on par with the 4 / .
it really gets down to the boat and set up ,my last boat 24 ft cat had a pair of 225 optis, swinging 23pitch mirage plus props it did 60 knts at 5800rpm and 24knts at 2200 rpm for a total fuel burn of 22ltr per hr[thats better than 1nm per litre].
i felt the 225 optis were still the best pic for my 233 as i had a weight issue,i couldnt put engines weighing more than 230 kg each ,which ment either 175 suzukis of 200 vrods in the 4 / or up to 300 optis or etecs in the 2/.and il bet my 225 optis will give me better economy than the 4/ because they will run a bigger prop and do less revs for 24knt cruise.
my rule of thumb for boat powering is put the most hp on it you can ,the faster your top speed the more economical your cruise speed.
until the 4/ get as light as the 2/ the di 2/ will have the advantage 98% of the time ,thats at the moment ,but 4/ s are making rapid progress thats for sure.

I love my 4 strokes. I've replaced the mower, whipper snipper, larger outboard and now the smaller one. I'm a fisherman not a race car driver. Never again no more 2 strokes.

the problem with 4/s is $$$$$ and weight.
For example if you have a limit of xxxkg it can be the choice between 4/S SOME 20HP LESS or a 2/s, so weight and $$$.

OH and the owners telling everyone else that they have the best and if you dont have one well you are just not good enough.......

yes the dollars hurt i looked at a 150 hp yamy 4 banger it was 25 kgs heavier as well as 2 thousand dollars dearer and in the first year serviceing costs would be over a thousand dollars more . the yamy had a 10hr a 50 hr and a 100 hr or 1 yr service

i did not have to service at 100hrs but i decided to.cost 240 dollars for new impellor gearbox oil change and a new fuel filter in boat .

i would glady put a 150 opti on as well

Cowl size and bulk is the other isue in tight wells or where there isn't enough room to tilt on older hulls without a extra set back bracket. Electrical requirements and belt driven alternators, compressors etc are a pet hate of mine as well. How many carry a spare belt and tools.

I hate that I can't find a second hand Yamaha F115, 'cause no one wants to sell theirs.

And a new one is around 17 grand! when are the prices in Australia going to come down? The dollar has been at parity with US for a long time, yet they sell them there for under 10 grand!

    Matt

They need to bring out a lightweight 130 or something, so everyone will start upgrading to it, and make some second hand F115s available.
