Re: What I hate about 4 strokes

Noelm only heard two of these engines together many year ago so forget largely, mine has nothing appealing in the sound it makes also i foamed the daylights out of the cowl so at cruise it's quieter than any 4 stroke I ever heard (also it's on a pod) and only marginally louder at idle/troll, at the ramp I get sideways looks at the ramp from the all shiny brigade

Without the foam shielding that frequency it does make a right messy din, you nailed that sound very well!

I agree they are a hard engine to go past overall, except for top end i get very very close to the same L/KM at the same cruise speed as what Yamaha tech sheets get for their 115s 4st on shorter boats (I have tuned all the slack + a little more out of the setup though).

But if today for some reason I needed to replace it i would look toward the 4strokes first.

It must be a in the ears of the beholder thing! I know billfish definately like the humm of a fourstroke over the 2 stroke noise! And thats music to my ears!

yeah well, I am yet to use my new motors for that sort of fishing, next weekend I think though, they are still pretty thick down here, I will let yuo know if I agree! there was a guy on the radio yesterday that hooked a marlin on 15KG at 9AM, I heard him at 4:30PM and he was still on it, unsure if it was extra large, he was useless, or it was foul hooked or something.

Just get yourself a quality sound system and play some Hendrix at full blast. Should take care of any sound issues.

yeah well. . . there is that, are you saying then that the huge 2" speaker in my GME radio is not good enough?

Ahhhhhh, induction noise. Pull off the cowls and give em a run and even better the airbox and you will once again have some pleasure for your ears.

Like you I have trouble with very quiet motors as I can't tell when they are under too much load these days. You could always hear a 2 stroke when it was breathing and not overloaded. I always used to run with the cabin door open a bit so I could hear the motors in harmony - much more accurate than the revcounters.

I too hate the woosh and gearbox , diff style whine you hear on a 4 stroke. Same overall volume just a different tone that doesn't work for my pencil lead.

But I have the answer. Why have V4 when you can V8 monster V10 or V12 or we can load up "your V4 noise) Might need 2 of em though.

This will save you thousands on not buying a new truck as well. You won't hear the rattles in the old cruiser anymore.

There was also a german firm placing speakers in the final exhaust on high performance race cars to create the opposite "noise" sort of like noise cancelling headphones for a near silent exhaust note.

Google up electric drag bike if you really want to dissappoint your ears.

One sound i dont miss since re donking with a 4 stroke, is the litre meter clicking over on the petrol bowser when re fueling after a big day on the water. Now it seems to only last half as long.

Couldn't of said it any better myself Ian. Nothing beats a 50W at full scream with a 200kg blue danceing over the ocean while ur screaming at your deckies to clear the gear

Re: What I hate about 4 strokes

Yeah i'm not a huge fan of all this quiet, smokeless, gutless pinko, lezzo, commo, purse carrying 4 stroke stuff. But i can see the advantages i suppose.

But i just happen to luv the way the 2smoke dances on the still water after you've fired her up at 4am..i also luv the sound but most of all i luv the smellllllllll . That whiff of 2smoke u get when u finally get to your mark and back off with the wind behind you...spells fish to me . But hey ignore me ....i'm one of those weird types that doesnt mind the smell of petrol either. Whilst the other kids were sniffing chrome paint and shoving pure and simple up their nose, i was always happy with a jam tin of 92 octane. Kiddies... just ignore me ok i;m kiddin.

One of the most memorable boating experiences i can recall was the shotgun start of a pt stephens interclub about 81/82...fishing off one of only about 2or3 42 bertrams in the country at the time. A certain coogee bay hotel owner's rig. Whilst i hate the smell of new fibreglass/gelcoat nothing beats that enormous cloud of black diesel exhaust when u plant the throttles on 1000 horsepower of american muscle diesel. The smoke..the smell...the atmosphere...the sound of throwing 100 dollar bills overboard. Ok a carby 2 stroke outboard may not be quite the same thing but its a real motor too...you can hear them working. I dont need some stupid alarm to tell me something isnt right..i can HEAR it aint right before any alarm goes off. The none too subtle tone changes they make when getting up then onto the plane...the growl they make. Its all part of the boating experience to me.

On a sunny sunday in summer if you listen very carefully...tell everyone near you to shut up and just listen for a moment. Off in the distance if you're lucky you can still hear the sound of some lucky bloke flushing his 2 stroke, growling and spluttering in his driveway. Its music.
