    Winchin' the 565.

I recently installed an X-Winch in my Haines Hunter 565. Thought I'd share some pics of the fit-up.

A shot of the winch. This is an X-Winch Medium

Control switch located in a position which minimises possibility of accidental operation.

The solenoid was mounted on a bulkhead at the end of the starboard side cabin pocket.

All wiring was secured with 'P' clips and cable ties. Needless to say, tinned copper cable was used throughout.

A shot of some of the other wiring in the boat. I did this near on 6 years ago, still good as new. Pays to do things properly the first time I guess.

The circuit breaker was mounted at the end of a side pocket, also on the starboard side of the boat.

Here's the hatch cut-out ie for the rope and chain to pass through.

Being a medium size winch, the fit was nice and snug.

As I don't mind getting out in the rough, there was a chance that an increased amount of water would enter the anchor well through the cut-out in the hatch. Solution, double up on the drain. One now fitted to each side.

Rope prepared for loading on to the winch. 100m of 8mm Australian made, polyester double braid.

Winch now loaded with rope and chain. You can also see the custom deck roller I had made up. Then I took to it with a rubber mallet so it's base matched the curvature of the deck. Had it made extra wide because it is located close to the winch.

And here's a view from the helm.

Have heard nothing but great reports on the new SARCA Excel, so I decided to upgrade to one.

Just need to fabricate and fit a stainless scratch plate to the top of the bow sprit before the job is finished. Other than that it's ready to go.

    Hope you enjoyed the pics.

    Regards,
    Spiro

Very nice work, nice to see a healthy OCD component.

Do it once do it right is a smart way to operate.

You should be very proud of workmanship of that standard.

G'day Blackrat. Always tie off when trying to raise a fouled anchor otherwise you'll damage the gearbox.

I also tie off when fishing in rough conditions as this will extend the service life of the gearbox.

PS: Yours may be similar but I'm betting it's not an X-Winch

    Thanks for the comments.

Another thing I believe in is 'buy once, cry once'. There is so much crap on the market these days, it's better to save your pennies and buy quality first up. Going cheap will always cost you more in the long run.

    A word of advise;

You need a swivel between the anchor and the chain. will spin correct on the bottom, take the tangle out of your rope and also allow the anchor to spin the correct way when it hits the bow spirit,u can see your chain already twisted.

    cheers

You're absolutely right about the swivel Hakuna. Had one on my previous anchors (Standard SARCA & Plough) and intend on using one here also.

Looks like an excellent job Spiro, and very impressed with all the wiring. I have never seen one off these winches in action, so does the rope lay flat when used a few times. I thought it might tend to all bunch up in the middle ???

    Re: Winchin' the 565.

Some bunching is inevitable but if the installation is done right it can be minimised.

    1. Don't fill the drum to max capacity.
    2. The closer the winch is to the roller, the wider the roller needs to be.
    3. Avoid the use of hawse pipes where possible, but especially when the distance between the winch and bow sprit is small.

Assuming the installation has been done well, a little bit of practice (5-6 operations) is sufficient to develop the skill? needed to lay the line nicely across the winch when retrieving an anchor.

    Spiro

That is some awesome quality workmanship done there. Well done. I've got a 635L that could do with a lot of your quality workmanship ha.
