thats could be the case, but lets say 5 years ago, Yamaha was the brand everyone loved, and never ever bagged, but these days it is not uncommon for someone to say "I will never buy another Yamaha" now if it is a case of that yamaha was the king of the kids for so long and now are starting to get just a tiny bit slack and complacent is anyones guess.
so the results show, Yamaha is a clear winner, (predicted) followed by Suzuki, which I think is rather surprising when you consider they are quite new to the market (well the latest incantation) then Honda, which is also kind of interesting, and Mercury and Evinrude a tie for what's left of the "big market" then Tohatsu, with Johnson no longer made, it is not surprising that they are so low in rank.
What about Mariner outboards?

I have recently owned a 40hp Tohatsu TLDI (2 stroke). IMHO they are one hell of a lovely motor. I now own a 2012 model 40hp Suzuki (4 stroke). It is a beautiful smooth and quite motor. Both motors are great if you want 2 stroke or 4 stroke IMO.

I started out with OMC 40hp ( had evinrudes and Johnson's) they had issues with gear boxes but what did with them any motor would. Moved up to the 50hp evinrude (lasted 4months) and traded it in on a 60hp Bigfoot mercury. I can not praise this outboard enough, I would go through 2 stainless props a year and about 15000 to 20000 liters of fuel a year. The only servicing that was done was the gearbox oil. When the fuel prices started going up, I went to the 50hp four stroke but was not really happy with that motor (self destructed).
I am back to the Bigfoot now and could not be happier, it drinks a little more but the motor is damn reliable and near indestructible.
I am mercury all the way.
i agree with above post i have owned a 2 stroke 50hp merc for over 10 years with over 600hrs never had a problem was never a fan of them once but can't praise them enough now start up cold/ hot aways first start wether it been six months since it last went out as for 4 strokes is more of weight issue for me as mine is tiller steer all weights down the back i dont need more but a suzuki would be my next pick if did go a 4 stroke as is one of lighter ones fuel range is not really a issue for me as get around 32 nm on a 25 liter tank at 3 1/4 stick in a 4.45 tinny just checked my trip log i have done a total of 80.5 nm for 2 1/2 tanks of fuel take some off for drifting while fishing in the last two trips probs just go a 2stroke again on mine but depends on $$$$price at the end of the day but all comes down personal preff hey aslongs as they serve as well and get us all home safe happy boating all.

I'll abstain from voting purely because for me, the choice of engine brand I chose is dependant on the HP range I require and the boat it's going on.
One single brand doesn't "own" the outboard market. Thankfully that leaves some variety.
yep boat and hp does effect the outcome but check out Post #5 re this.
Had a Yammie 60 4, was good apart from a few little issues.
But Have ticked Honda as i just bought one

Thats 55 liters per day, for a 60hp thats a thursty outboard. Where and what the hell are you doing and for how long?

It was on the thirsty side but it was compariable with other brands at the time, but taking into account that was traveling up to 50 to 80 miles per day (total ffuel consumption went upto 70-80L on big days) it was OK. The main thing that attacted me to the moter was that it was nearly unbreakable, if saw what we did with them you would cry and i could not fault the dealer service.
To answer your question on what i was doing with them - commercial crabbing in north queensland and in the gulf. When I went to the Gulf i started using 4 Stoke 50 mecurys. Only issue with them is that you had to start looking after them as there was no service centre 200 miles from nowhere.
Voted yamaha ages ago, but have since had a johnson and now a mercury. Definitely favour the yamaha, followed by the johnson with my current mercury being my least favourite motor.
So I guess in that light my vote certainly hasn't changed.
